Let's start with the first year students...

Always genki inside and outside the classroom...

All the cleaning throughout the school is done by the students. Sometimes they get a bit carried away...
Watchout for that ever popular peace symbol...

Second years... a little more rebelious...

Hair styles and fashion are a very big deal, even for the boys!!

You may notice the students all wearing slippers. Inside the school buildings "inside shoes" must be worn. Different shoes are worn for the gym, the kitchen, the toilets... something I am still getting used to!
Sports day was a big event for the school. The RED team competed against the defending champions, the BLUE team. Omedeto to BLUE for upholding their title.
The teams were even judged on their cheering abilities! Taiko drum included!
Another big event on the school calender was the choir competition as part of the cultural festival. The students were great! Even the teachers sang... I have not sung in a choir on stage since my high school! It was quite an experience in front of students, parents and anyone in Kumiyama who had the day off!

And of course no school would be complete without the teachers! Here are a few snapes from the enkai after the school sports day!

An enkai is a Japanese dinner party... there is more talking here between collegues than at work! Basically after the big boss says kampai (Japanese for cheers!), everyone drinks and drinks and drinks...

Gotta love the enkai!

Kumiyama Junior High or Kumichu is a co-educational school where the students are aged between 12 and 15. I teach all 13 classes a week with the Japanese English teachers and ocassionally play oboe in the brass band (bet you never thought the oboe was a brass instrument!) and learn the Japanese art of bamboo control (otherwise known as whack one another) with the Kendo club.

Shashin o totte mo ii desu ka? Mochiron!!
