Article #1 - GETTING THE MOST FROM A CLINIC

Attending a riding or training clinic with your horse can be a fun and challenging activity, but there are some things you need to consider if youre going to get the most out of the experience.

First, be honest with yourself about your riding skills and your horses training level. A colt-starting clinic isnt the place for a beginning rider. When there are several colts in an arena, things can get hairy real fast and you need to have enough horse savvy to handle the situation. Dont expect the clinician to personally work with your horse only unless youve paid him extra to do so. Hes there to share his methods with the whole group. Likewise, if youve been competing in reining classes and want to improve your performance, dont sign-up for an introductory reining clinic. It helps if you have a specific goal in mind. Perhaps you want to learn ways to teach your horse to stand still, sidepass or do flying lead changes. You need to find a clinic to accommodate your skill level. If its too basic, youll loose interest and if its too advanced, youll just get frustrated with yourself and your horse...etc.
