Nalbinding
Nalbinding is a relatively unknown craft, that is great for making small items like socks and mittens. It can also be used for larger things, but I don't know of any extant examples from the dark ages or medieval period of anything larger than a stocking.
List of extant examples
There will be some links to pictures here eventually. Until then, here is a text list of the examples I can think of off the top of my head.
- Coppergate sock - York stitch, approx 3.6 rows per cm
- Uppsala sock - Oslo stitch (?), not sure of scale
- 12th C Swiss stocking - don't know anything else about it
- I know there are more examples, but I will have to think of them some other time...
