My Nalbinding
So far I have only mastered the Oslo stitch. I have played with the Mammen stitch a little, and an now experimenting with York. I plan to eventually make up a set of instructions that explain it in the way I do it (I know there are plenty of different instructional websites out there, but none of them appeal to my way of learning nalbinding - in fact, I only worked out the thumb tensioning thing from watching some of the videos, and still prefer needle tensioning, and teach it that way).
I will eventually get some pictures up, and some thoughts about coppergate sock construction (I have some ideas about how the heel is done, and why, but I need to think through it a bit more)
- Proto-socks (made with a modified buttonhole stitch)
- First real socks, Oslo stitch, tension too tight. Madder dyed band at ankle
- Mittens, Oslo stitch, tension I'm happy with - needle approx 4mm diameter. Indigo dyed band at wrist. One of the thumbs is too long, need to make it shorter.
- More socks, natural grey-brown coloured wool, Oslo stitch
- Yet another pair of socks, Oslo stitch, Indigo dyed band at ankle. Tried a slightly different heel, quite happy with how it turned out.
- Making a jumper in thumb tensioned Oslo, as a practice piece. It's amazing how much less wool it uses than needle tensioning, I have done at least a third of it with less wool than I use in a pair of socks.
- Also slowly working on some socks based on the coppergate find.
- Made some more mittens, Oslo stitch, white with red band, given away as a birthday present
- More mittens, natural grey-brown coloured wool, Oslo stitch
- Will probably make some fine socks (coppergate scale, oslo stitch) at some point, since the York stitch requires more concentration, and thus takes a lot more enthusiasm
- Made a pair of socks, Oslo stitch, natural grey-brown coloured wool, green band at ankle. Given in exchange for some bone carving
Eventually I will get around to taking some pictures...
