My rating: 3.2/5

Crusade, in my opinion, was a "try-too-hard" episode to kick of the 4th season. With Lana having left for Paris at the end of the 3rd season, Covenant, there was a lot of unfinished business. This episode started off with a video from Chloe addressed to Clark, asking to find out why she was murdered. Chloe's cousin, Lois Lane, was watching this video and then went out in search of Clark to help solve the mystery. When she became lost and her vehicle went off-road, she found him lying in a field, 'start naked' and struck by lightning. Not knowing who she had found, she rush him to the Smallville Medical Center. I thought that so far, Erica Durance was rushing through her lines and didn't impress me with the arrival of the legendary 'Lois Lane'.

On top of that, I'm not a huge fan of the whole "Amnesia" theory behind Clark's odd behavior. I thought the writers could've wrote that better. But Tom Welling did a great job of acting his script. Also I wasn't too fond of his hair cut, but he was still hot. Tom did a great job when he was in the loft with Annette and he dropped Jonathan's picture, "Either way, he's dead." was the powerful line he had said.

Annette O'toole proved how strong of a mother and wife Martha Kent really is. In this episode, like any other, she played her character very well. She is excellent in expressing her love and commitment to her family. With Jonathan in the hospital and Clark in another dimension, Martha waited loyally and patiently by Jonathan's side praying to become a family again. She was the true hero of this episode as she guided both of them back home.

However, I think they introduced Black Kryptonite too soon in the episode and in the season. It seemed to me as though the writers were rushing too much information and sci-fi into this one episode. That and when Clark started flying gave of the vibe that they were trying to hard to get ratings.

The whole Lana and Jason situation, coming from a obsessed Clana lover, I thought was well acted and written. They looked really happy together, which is a big accomplishment for Lana coming off Clark. Though it's sad to see her and Clark not together, it's heart-warming to see her happy and in love again. The scene towards the end of the episode, when Jason comes back to get Lana, after she took off to go back home, I thought this showed his sweet side and told us how much he really loves her.

I truly don't believe that Lex's scavenger hunt was necessary to the plot of Crusade. I understand that the crystal that he found is important later on but I think they should've kept to the caves of some aspect like that.

The last hospital scene was a great way of the Kent family appreciating each other. Martha explains how she had the power to go on, and she is the only one who would've been able to do that. "Kal-el can fly. Clark Kent is still earthbound." is, to me, the most important line in this episode. It explains the difference between Kal-el and Clark Kent.

The very last scene, with Lois in the graveyard, was a very powerful and emotional scene. This is when I think Erica 'broke out'. She grieved really well over her cousin. And with Clark coming and assuring her that they will find out why Chloe was killed, it showed how their friendship sort of started. But when Clark x-rayed Chloe's grave and told Lois that she was still alive, just set him up to be questioned in the future.Affiliates

Overall I thought this episode was poorly written in some areas, but the actors did an excellent job at acting it out. Eric Durance and Jensen Ackles, brought their character to life and felt right at home. Some of the material seemed a little rushed and too science fiction. But all goes well in the end with that amazing scene.
