Smalls Mountain is located in the most mineralogically diverse region of the world -- the famous Oxford Hills of Maine.  Over a thousand different minerals have been found in this area, including nearly all well-known gemstones.  The rocks here are fascinating!
Above: left- a "puddingstone," so-called because the stones embedded in the granite resemble raisins in pudding. right - mica schist, a striking, shiny type of rock, of which most of the mountain seems formed.

Below: Feldspar showing basalt intrusion
Above:  This tree gree up the side of a ledge, hence it appears to be half a tree.  Note the pieces of rock embedded within the trunk.

Left:  A porous rock, found in a few places on the mountain, is of completely different character than rocks surrounding it.
