American Beauty

Again, for the sake of my ego, I wil repeat that what I stat in my reviews is only my opnion, and not to be taken as anything more than a gratuitous rant from someone who goes to see waaaay too many movies.

I would like to say first that I never wanted to see American Beauty. Unfortunately, I was dating at the time, and all calf-eyed, so my common sense was overridden and I allowed myself to believe that the people who nominate movies for Oscars didn't have cotton balls where most people keep their brains.

I suppose the casting was good; though I hated the characters, the actors played them very well. The various technical aspects of the film, though they might have been superlative and shown to people as "How You Make A Movie", I cannot comment upon because quite frankly I know nothing about them.

What I do know is that I had never in my life thoroughly hated a movie before, never been so completely unable to find a single redeeming factor in a film. I had to take a restroom break in the middle of this movie to throw up, although to be fair, popcorn sometimes affects me that way.

I will spare anyone who may read this review the gory details of the plot, in case you saw it and liked it (which I know some did, including my boyfriend at the time), or in case you haven't seen it and may want to at some point.

The characters, to my mind, were all horrible people who for whatever reason decided that everyone else on the face of the planet was solely in existence to serve them, and tehn got upset when it wasn't the case. None of them had the common sense (or common courtesy) shown by a mud puddle, let alone what I, at least, would consider civilized manners.

In short (because this is not a movie I care to talk about for long), American Beauty is the first movie ever that I truly, deeply hate, and if I never see it again, it will be too soon.
