Prop Grenades
A friend of mine was assigned to do a movie for his spanish class, and enlisted me to help him. In it, they had a scene where a couple bullies drop a grenade onto a girl, which then explodes. Shortly after writing this into the script, we realised none of us had any hand grenades lying around. So, I decided to make one. I ended up making two.
I have no job, no license, and am lazy. Thus, all of my projects must consist of what I can find lying around the house. After some quick research at google images, I was ready to go. I scoured the house for items I thought might come in handy for making a hand grenade. I gathered up what you see to the left: A D ring, superglue, plastic easter egg, keychain, small piece of PVC pipe, a metal bar with a whole through one end (used to be a wind chime), and an old plastic comb. What more could I ask for? At least one thing, apparently. I added to my list a small section of black rubber hose.
I figured I could use the fat spine of the comb for the lever on my hand grenade. It would come out smooth and pseudo-metal looking, and wouldn't break too easily. Plus, plastic superglues really well. In order to seperate the spine from the rest of the comb, I took an exacto knife and scored each side of the row of spikes, near the base. After that, it was simply a matter of bending them until they snapped off.
With that done, I decided to get to work on the body. The easter egg would make a nearly perfect shape, but was way too light to look realistic on camera. So I opted to fill it with water. First, I superglued it shut. One of the ends already had a hole in it, so I simply submerged it in water until it filled. This took aproximately forever. The tiny hole would only allow a drop of water in at a time. The escaping bubbles did, however, make a cool ripple look in the picture here. It looks like a drop of water just fell in, when really a drop of air just flew out.
Once it was full, I needed to plug the hole. I put a drop of superglue onto it, then stuck one of the spikes from the comb into it, like a nail. It worked quite well to plug the hole. Next, I glued the bottle cap to the top. That easter egg looked so cute wearing a hat, it was fit to go to church! .....wait- what? The cap served as a flat base for the top of the grenade.
Here I have attached the black hose to the bottle cap. I then took the comb spine, cut off the ends, and wired it to the hose. For the wire, I just used a twisty tie. Burn the paper right off of it and you've got some strong, thin wire. When you're as cheap as I am, you pick up on these things.
I stuffed it with a couple cotton balls, then poured superglue over them to harden it all. I wanted to reinforce it and make it more solid.
