| AOL Emoticon Uses |
| I've been using AOL Instant Messenger for a while now, so I feel I'm quite qualified to speak on this matter. Almost everyone I talk to uses these little smiley guys at some time or other. Unfortunately, they all use them wrong. Through my extensive research and many e-mails to the AOL staff, I discovered how these icons were intended to be used. And as you will see, the results are rather surprising. |

| The Smile is a frequently misused icon. Its purpose is to convey the idea that you are happy. It is not intended to mean you're smiling at the person, or making a joke, or anything like that. Incorrect: "your such a dorkface " Correct: "i am haveing the best day EVAR!!!1 " |

| The Frown |
| The Frown is not used incorrectly nearly as often as The Smile. Its purpose of course is to denote sadness. Not worry, discomfort, or apathy. Incorrect: "omg i jsut walked in on my dad wackin it how gross is that " Correct: "My dog got crushed by a truck today. HIs funerel is tomorow. " |

| The rest just get plain weird. I'm not making these up folks. |

| Perhaps the most useful of icons, the "My mouth is falling off and I don't know what to do" icon has been used by some as a sign of nervousness or indescision. Although not its intended use, it seems appropriate, because most people whose mouths fall off are often nervous and/or indescisive. Note: This icon was almost replaced with the "My mouth is falling off and I do know what to do" Face, but a last minute executive descision changed this. Incorrect: "My cousin wants me to perform oral sex on him... " Correct: "holy shitt man!!1 my mouth is fallnig off!!!1 what do i do?????? " |

| The Foot Fetish |
| Don't even try. There is no other reason for the existance of this icon other than for one to admit to their twisted love of feet. Look at those half closed, glazed over eyes. Those are not the eyes of a normal person. Those are the eyes of one lost in thought and thinking only of putting lots of dirty sweaty feet in his/her mouth. That's it. Incorrect: "er.. no i didn't slaughter those babies and eat them... " Correct: "Yo sup chica lemme get a taste of thoes fine feet o yos " |

| This one's pretty straight forward. It means you want to lick someone. Incorrect: "awwww ur so cute!!!!!11 " Correct: "dude this chick i seen today was soooo hott i just wanted to lick her " |
