What is South
Lyon Percussion?
South Lyon Winter Percussion is an extracurricular
music activity sponsored by the South Lyon High School Music Program and the
South Lyon Music Boosters. South Lyon Percussion consists of students presently
enrolled in the South Lyon Schools who perform a musical program through the
winter months after the fall marching band season. Both orchestral (pit) percussion
instruments and marching (battery) percussion instruments are used in an array
of persuasive voices integrated with color and movement to present a musical
theme. Winter Guard International (the national governing organization for the
activity) describes winter percussion as "A symphony of percussive voices
blended to create music through an amazing array of instruments. Musical creativity,
technical expertise and dramatic and expressive sound captivate the listener
with musical journies that travel from rudimentary drumming through to experimental
sound."
What
is the SLP Philosophy?
This activity is one that uses competition and ranking
by scoring as the primary measure of success. The philosophy of South Lyon Percussion
is more simple than that; our goal is to be the best we can be both as performers
and people. We all enjoy high rankings and the acolades and respect they bring,
but we will be successful in our efforts regardless of score or placement if
we truly have accomplished all we can as a team, learned music and life lessons,
and had fun in the process.
Commitment
As a member of SLP, commitment means:
Working hard at all times
Reaching new individual performance levels
Attending every rehearsal and performance
Learning your music and roles
Rearranging your schedule to make it all work (time management)
Opening your mind to new concepts and challenges
Meeting new people/making new friends
Traveling to new places
Having new experiences
Learning to deal with frustration
Goal setting and the satisfaction of reaching those goals
Learning new respect for the people behind the scenes that make it all work...parents,
teachers, band directors, bus drivers, sponsors, judges, band boosters, each
other...
