| Pure Dynamite Tuesday Feb.12, 2002 Some random thoughts. First off I wrestled in the M.W.A. Championship tournament this past Sunday and lost to Spencer Lewis in the first round. Not cleanly though. When he pinned me my leg and arm were both underneath the ropes and the rookie referee that was working our match failed to realize it. Personaly I think it is a conspirasy against the "aura of badassedness that surrounds me". But thats o.k. I then challenged Spencer for a rematch at the Roll-a-Dome show we have coming up in March called Massacre 2 and I'm sure I'll pay Spencer back then!!! I just finished reading a book today called "Pure Dynamite". It is the autobiography of a wrestler named Tom Billington aka The Dynamite Kid. I remember growing up watching him wrestle first for Stamepede Wrestling in Calgary and then later on in the WWF as part of the British Bulldogs with Davey Boy Smith. He was always one of my favorite wrestlers and his work rate in the ring made you have to respect him. Especially for me as he too was "vertically challenged" and was only 5'8" tall. But he never let his lack of size stop him from doing what he did best which was making everybody he worked with in the ring look great. And really, when you get right down to it, that is what pro wrestling is all about. Your job as a wrestler is to make whoever you are working with in the ring look good. You shouldn't be in it for making yourself look like Superman or as Dynamite says "in it for the glory". The Dynamite Kid did his job as good if not better than most pro's have or ever will do it, taking the hard bumps and the stiff shots all at the expence of his body. Mabye he did his job too well as he is now retired and confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Mind you, all the years of steroid and drub use probably didn't help either. But it really got me thinking about what happens in the WWF these days. Are wrestlers really working hard to make their opponent look good? Or are they "in it for the glory"? I guess the only way to answer that would be to actually be in the dressing room or better yet be inside the wrestlers heads. Both of which I'll probably never be able to do. All I can do is hope that young and aspiring wrestlers like myself use wrestlers such as Triple H, Chris Benoit, Kurt Angle, and if you have some old video tapes, the Dynamite Kid, who are proven bump machines and will not think twice about making others look good, as their inspiration and role models rather than guys like The Undertaker or Hulk Hogan or Billy Gunn or Bill Goldberg, because allot of the time I have a hard time figuring out who guys like this are trying to put over. Their opponents or themselves. Anyways just thought I'd share that with you. And as for the Dynamite Kid, thank you for being a great inspiration to us all (inside the ring anyways) and showing us all what being a professional is really about. So untill next time Face the Sledge Hammer....If You Dare!!!! |
