"The SLBS pictures were taken at the SLBS Christmas meeting, held in Old Shades on the evening of 10th December 2001.

In many respects the Old Shades is like a thousand other pubs in central London � big, wood-panelled and staffed by Australians � as well as being blessed with a huge stone fireplace at the back. But there are elements designed to make its clientele feel at home. For a start, the main bar is dominated by a big domed ceiling, which gives the place an appropriately powerful, institutional feel, an atmosphere that might make the humble taxpayer want to cower in a corner, but is a comfortable reflection of the office for many of the regulars.

The Old Shades offers a good range of the usual tipples, with something to wet the most parched administrative whistle, whether it belongs to a real-ale aficionado, a lager-guzzler or a gin-swiller.
