Slashing Cordelia

So you want to write some Cordy?

Well, just a couple words of advice, be careful. Cordelia Chase is a different person depending on when you're writing her. She's a character who has gone through an incredible change over the course of 5 years. So, with this in mind, here's a little guide to writing Cordelia, based on season.

Season 1 Cordy

We're first introduced to Cordelia as the carefree party girl. She's a rich bitch, and has her own little flock of lemmings, the Cordettes. She's your typical spoiled teenager; she expects, and gets, the best. She's superficial, mean, and bitchy. She makes fun of anyone who's not in her social circle, (i.e. -- in reference to Willow's outfit: It's nice to know you've seen the softer side of Sears) and has little tolerance for anyone she deems socially unacceptable. She's the queen of the school, the girls want to be her, and the guys want to be with her.

What's really important when writing Cordelia in season one is remembering that she's totally tactless. While this doesn't really change throughout her development, it's very prominent in season one. She's brutally honest, and she doesn't think twice about saying what's on her mind. Another factor to consider is Cordelia's wit. It's rather biting, and she doesn't spare anyone. Cordelia is nothing if not quick witted, and you have to remember that when writing her in any season. If you have to put too much thought into her jokes, it's not gonna work. She's reactionary, not thought out.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember when you write season one Cordelia that she has no idea about all this supernatural stuff. As far as she knows, the scooby gang is a bunch of losers, and Buffy gets her cheap thrills spying on people making out at night. So if you're going to put her in a relationship with Willow or Buffy before the very end of season one, you have to remember that the whole "SLAYER?" issue will have to be dealt with.

We do, however, get hints of the Cordy to come within season one. In the second to last episode, Invisible Girl, Cordelia is kidnapped by a vengeful girl named Marcy, who was so ignored by others that she turned invisible. This is where Cordy is introduced to the ick factor of Sunnydale, and the viewer is introduced to the deeper side of Cordelia. She tells Buffy that she knows what it's like to be lonely, even when you're surrounded by people. When Buffy asks why she keeps up the popular persona, Cordy replies that "it beats being alone all by yourself".

Then, in the season finale, Cordelia plays calvary, rescuing Willow, Xander, and Mrs. Calendar from the vamp patrol. This is her formal induction into the scooby gang, whether she likes it or not. Again, an important hint at the real Cordelia: she could have easily threw her hands in the air and been done with it, but she didn't. Because deep down, even throughout her season one bitchiness, Cordelia Chase is a good person.
