| This is an important topic for me, because I have watched every single episode of Buffy, no matter how shit it was, and I have watched the writers flush Willow's character down the toilet. Repeatedly. I can't keep this inside my system anymore. Ok, so let's examine the character of Willow. We meet her in episode one of season one. The first of the first. We are shown that she is harbouring a harsh and realistic crush on her longtime best friend, Xander Harris. You can see that he does not return those feelings. You feel her pain, because at one point or another, every teenager has held onto that one crush of the one person they know they can never have. After Xander, and even during the Xander crush, she meets Oz. And she falls in love with him. Again, we have a serious display of emotion here. Their relationship was so fun when it was good, but so heartwrenchingly sad when it went bad. You share her love, her happiness and eventually her pain. And through Oz, you share his love for Willow, and his heartbreak when she is caught with Xander. Back to Xander, her first love, the one person she always wanted, but when she gets him, she realises that she would rather be with Oz. But when Oz leaves, we see a different side to Willow. She's heartbroken and distraught. Then we meet Tara. A somewhat tentative relationship at first, mainly because it was a somewhat tentative topic. Willow became gay. It seemed like it was too soon after Oz's departure. She hadn't healed properly, and now she was gay. But this relationship developed, it blossomed and it became so real, just like her crush on Xander and her love with Oz. A lot of people bashed Willow when she went evil after Tara was murdered, but I believed the story to be fantastic. Willow and Tara had overcome so much with their relationship, and then suddenly, Tara was shot down senselessly. It was outside the normal realm of Buffy to show random acts of violence, but it showed how people were torn apart once it had happened. And you couldn't help but feel the heartache for Willow. She'd finally found what she wanted, and she'd finally gotten it too, and then it was over. It ended in a single instant, and yes, she reacted badly. But we were shown how much Tara meant to her, and how much she was hurting. So she went evil. But who pulled her out of it? The very first true love of her life, Xander. Once again, cyclicle. He pulled her down from the edge with his love, appealed to her emotions and saved the world and saved Willow. Enter Kennedy. A handful of Potential Slayers and one happens to be gay. Fine. Does that mean if you put two lesbians in a house that they're AUTOMATICALLY going to hook up? No. It's an insult to Willow's character. There's no development of this relationship, or even a friendship. If Willow and Kennedy just shared a night together, or a kiss, just to ease her heartache, that's fine. But to force another relationsip on Willow just because they wanted a Potential to be gay is just a slap in the face to the Willow we've atched grow and develop over the past seven years. It seems like someone who has never watched the show before and never knew her history just took over writing for her character. That's it, I'm done for now. |
