| Day 12: Rochester MN to Manitowoc, WI. Ferry to Ludington, MI |

| We left the Ahlquists' home and stopped by the Mayo Clinic to see the new Gonda building on our way to Wisconsin. The day was sunny and windy as we rode through miles of dairy country, via Fond du Lac. We arrived at around 5:00 PM at the ferry terminal in the depressed town of Manitowoc, WI. Formerly a ship-building town, Manitowoc seems to have fallen on hard times. We picked up our ferry tickets, and took a cheap (crummy) motel in town to catch a few hours sleep before we needed to be at the boat terminal at 11:00 PM for the crossing across Lake Michigan. Sad town that Manitowoc is, the food at the restaurant recommended to us, the Pub Grille, was quite good as was the beer made on the premises. Stan needed to buy tie downs with hooks (soft-loops wouldn't do) to anchor the bike to the ferry deck on the quaint SS Badger. Will the webbing hold? Our cabin on the Badget was small, but we were fortunate to have one. Most people slept in uncomfortable plastic seats in public areas. In the event, Ruth slept well but Stan did not. Should make the ride across Michigan interesting. The whole ferry experience is probably worth skipping if were ever do a ride like this again. |
