Welcome to SLAD web site!
Message
from the President
It is a great pleasure to send you this message as the new President of the SLAD. Our association is still rather young, having been started in 1985. It was started with a very small number of Dermatologists. Since then the SLAD has taken many strides and the specialty of Dermatology in Sri Lanka has grown from strength to strength. The number of Dermatologists has increased considerably since that time. The huge success of the recently conducted (October 2003) South Asian Regional Conference of Dermatology gave a good boost to the image of Sri Lankan Dermatology in the region and beyond. We are very grateful to Dr. W. D. H. Perera, Dr. Ganga Sirimanna, Dr. Jayamini Seneviratne, Dr. D. N. Atukorala and the Organizing Committee for a job well done! As
the demand for dermatology as a specialty is very high now, we can attract the
‘best and the brightest’ of medical postgraduates to our training programme.
The long term future of dermatology in the country will depend on the effective
application of talents and skills of the new generation of dermatologists, with
the advice and guidance from the experienced senior dermatologists. The aim of
the training programme should be to make our dermatology trainees on par play in
the CME activities. Now that compulsory ‘continuing professional
development’ (CPD) and re-certification are on the horizon, we should focus
much more on academic activities. More active participation at the CME events by
the dermatology trainees and all other members are encouraged. I also take this opportunity to encourage dermatologists both the ‘young’ and ‘not so young’ to make a committed effort to conduct scientifically sound studies, publish more papers and case reports etc. in order to put Sri Lankan Dermatology on the World Map of Dermatology. If we do not publish our observations, report rare cases and conduct studies to prove or disprove hypotheses, the future generations will have no evidence base coming from Sri Lanka. We have recently started a project to compile a bibliography of publications pertaining to dermatology in Sri Lanka with a view to encouraging future researchers and also to prevent the same study being done over and over due to lack of communication or awareness. We have planned many academic activities for the coming year. They include, regular monthly meetings, regional clinical meetings, a special Dermato-Surgery update session with Australian resource persons, collaborative work with the Wound Care Foundation of Sri Lanka and the Joint meeting with the German Dermatological Society in February 2004. We are also spearheading a campaign to from an ‘Asian Society for Pigment Cell Research’, which will take place in China in May 2004. We have received the support of the Indians, Singaporeans and the International Federation of Pigment Cell Societies for this effort. I wish to stress the need for all the members to actively participate in the upcoming activities of the SLAD. Please feel free to express your opinions and give me new suggestions to improve the SLAD (Tel. No.: 0722-806611, 2806131, [email protected]). We need your active support! As the Sinhala and Tamil New Year is round the corner, I also wish to send Very Warm Greetings to all of you, for an enjoyable new year season and a year ahead. Prasad
Kumarasinghe President, SLAD
Message from the Secretary
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for the confidence placed upon me in electing me to this post I am indeed fortunate to have the guidance of our very enthusiastic & able president Dr. Prasad Kumarasinghe.
In comparison to last year, this year would be a relatively quiet one. However we do intend to maintain a busy schedule in the form of updates & lectures. At least 2 regional meetings are also planned & look forward to your active participation. The high point of the term would be the joint meeting with the German Dermatological Society scheduled for February 2005. So get started on those research studies right now!
Dr. Chalukya Gunasekera Hony. Secretary, SLAD
