Kotuku - the White Heron

  On the ground the primary focus was the completion of the
    whare nui building. These pics show early progress.

   In December 2000 the foundations and boxing 
   were completed. The concrete base was were poured in
  January 2001
In 1997 the Okarea Economic Development Plan set out a window of
  greenfields, land based opportunity based around the marae project
  development.

  A wide scope of potential was identified such as farming, horticulture,
  employment  and social ventures such as papakainga housing.

  With the optimism and enthusiasm of the rangatahi, and the
  guidance of kaumaatua planning, resourcing, networking and
  fundraising stepped up in a determined effort to achieve some
  simple goals. The marae committee worked closely with the whanau
  trust on the project.
  In February 2001 the portal legs and beams
   were erected

   In March 2002 builder Bruce Campbell was contracted to
   supervise the erection of the wall partitions and roofing to shell.
The Kotuku commands a very special place in Maori lore as a Spirit Messenger, an inhabitant of the nether world, the spirit land of Te Reinga
