Movie of the year

The Passion of the Christ

I think it’s a shame that this movie is being snubbed by various awards shows just because it’s “controversial” or whatever.  Never in my life have I watched something that hit me the way this did.  To me, this film rises above movies.  It was made with such heart and yes, passion, that all the energy Mel Gibson put into it comes pouring out in every frame.  From the opening scene until the final, there is not one part where I can say “eh…it gets a little slow here”.  The movie is just so filled with tension…which is amazing considering myself along with many people that saw it already know what happened.  But to see it played out as it was and the savage brutality of it all is one of the most gut-wrenching experiences I have ever sat through.  Just as “Saving Private Ryan” did for me in increasing my appreciation for everything Americans have gone through in war, “The Passion of the Christ” really shows the pain and suffering Jesus went through to atone for our sins.  At times the movie is downright disgusting, but it needed to be.  It’s one thing to read in The Bible that He was beaten and whipped, but it’s another to actually SEE what it was probably like.  And to know that every one of those hits He took was done for each and every one of us left me feeling so inferior after watching the movie…I just felt so unappreciative of everything.  It’s one of those things that had me re-evaluating my life.  I really wish this movie would get several Oscars because I truly believe it deserves them, but sadly it probably won’t.  If you haven’t seen it yet…please take the time to do so.  And if you’re like me you’ll need to make sure you’re alone because I ended up blubbering like a baby…even after watching it a second time.

Album of the year

“The Greater of Two Evils”

Now granted it has been a pretty lackluster year as far as new releases went…basically there was a bunch of junk that came out taking up space in the bins at Best Buy.  There was a new Danzig CD which wasn’t that great, a new Motorhead which was very good…even The Donnas had a new CD that was pretty good but nothing like their last one.  Side note – you wanna see a chick get irritated quickly?  Mention that you like The Donnas and watch them go off…I’ve seen it more than once.  And then there was Anthrax.  The cool thing about this CD was it really involved the fans.  Anthrax had on their website for several weeks a poll for the vans to vote on which songs to put on the CD.  These weren’t new tunes, they were the ones from the first few albums with their old singer Joey Belladonna.  Anthrax finally realized that the music on those songs kicked ass but the vocals were about as pleasant to listen to as someone banging on a garage door with a lead pipe, plus Belladonna always looked like he should have been singing for someone like Krokus anyway.  Re-recording those songs was pure genius and with John Bush’s vocals on there…it’s like hearing the stuff for the first time.  Well I guess technically it is seeing how they never recorded these tunes with John Bush before…but you get what I mean.  Classics like “Madhouse”, “Among The Living”, and “A.I.R.” can be played repeatedly now without having to convince yourself they’re good songs because the vocals are driving you nuts.  Plus, the music sounds SOOOO much heavier since it was re-recorded.  Classic songs done right…congrats ‘thrax.

Babe Achievement Award

Carmen Electra

Here's the deal...I used to have a "Lifetime Babe Award" for the older women who have proved themselves to stay babes even as they got into their years past 40, and I would also do a "Babe of the Year".  Well, this year I decided to mix it up or combine it...however you want to look at it.  What I decided to do was combine the awards into a sort of "super babe" award.  Basically the criteria is as follows....the winner has to be a chick that when I'm flicking through the channels I will ALWAYS stop to see what she's doing when she appears on my TV screen...and she has to be a babe that has proved her babe-worthiness over the years.  I know it sounds strict...but I have to have my standards.  This chick was all over the place in the early-mid 90's, then I didn't see her much...until one fateful day in 2000 when she was hosting the top 100 metal/hard rock bands ever on VH-1.  Granted, her cue-card reading ability left something to be desired...but the image of her in a leather mini-skirt and boots kept me watching.  Every now and then I'll see her in something...whether it's some E! TV special or a Maxim commercial...the remote stops when she is on the screen.  She is the epitome of babedom to me...dark hair...exotic look...all of it.  Over the years she has proved her babe longevity and is more than worthy of an award to honor her babe status...even from me...hahaha.  Yeah...as hot as she is, she definitely needed more recognition...it's not like every dude out there hasn't thought about her at one time or another...but I felt the need to devote a moment of my time to such a worthy babe.

Now normally the awards show would end at this point...but not this year...oh no.  This year is special...this year you get the first ever Rum & Coke Buzz Jackass of the Year Award...so without any further adieu...here it is...
