In The Pedigree

Alysheba

Alysheba was sired by Alydar out of the dam, Bel Sheba. Trained by Jack Van Berg, in 1986 Alysheba had a good but less than spectacular two-year-old season in racing but came into his own the following year. Ridden by Chris McCarron, he won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes but missed out on the U.S. Triple Crown when he finished fourth in the Belmont Stakes. He finished second to the four-year-old Ferdinand in the 1987 Breeders' Cup Classic, won the Grade 1 Stakes "Super Derby," and was named 1987's Champion Three Year Old.

As a four-year-old in 1988, Alysheba was dominant, winning several major Stakes races including the Santa Anita Handicap. He was retired to stud after winning the Breeders' Cup Classic. His performance earned him the Eclipse Award as 1988 Champion Older Male and Horse of the Year honors. Of his 26 career races, the horse finished with a 11-8-2 record and earnings of $6,679,242, a U.S. racing record at the time.

In 1993, Alysheba was inducted in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. In the Blood-Horse magazine ranking of the top 100 U.S. thoroughbred champions of the 20th Century, Alysheba was ranked #42.

Alysheba stood at stud at Lane's End Farm in Woodford County, Kentucky until 1999 when he was sold to a breeding operation in Saudi Arabia.

Alydar

Alydar was an American thoroughbred race horse who was most famous for finishing a close second to Affirmed in all three races of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing, a feat not repeated before or since and he most licky would of wo the triple crown if it hadnt been for Affirmed.
In his career, Alydar won 14 of 26 starts, finishing second 9 times and third once. He earned purses totalling $957,195. Alydar raced against Affirmed ten times in his career, winning three times. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1989.

Alydar was a major success as a stallion. His offspring include Alysheba, winner of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and the Breeders' Cup Classic, plus others such as Easy Goer, Turkoman, Strike the Gold, Criminal Type, Althea, and Miss Oceana.
On November 13, 1990, Alydar shattered his right hind leg in his stall at Calumet Farms in Lexington, Kentucky. Emergency surgery was performed the next day in an attempt to repair the injury, but the leg broke again. On November 15, Alydar was euthanized by lethal injection. Some have questioned the circumstances leading up to Alydar's sudden leg injury.

Secretariat

Secretariat was an American thoroughbred racehorse considered by many to be the greatest of all time. Secretariat won the 1973 Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, and Belmont Stakes (June 9), making him the first Triple Crown winner in a quarter of a century he Recorded 31-length win margin in Belmont Stakes.

He was 1972 Horse of the Year and Champion 2 Year Old Colt, 1973 Triple Crown Winner, Horse of the Year, Champion 3 Year Old Colt and Champion Turf Horse and also 1978 Leading Sire of Two Year Olds and 1992 Leading Broodmare Sire. He got 21 Starts and won 16 and only once was out of the placings.

Secretariat was retired to Claiborne Farm where he sired Horse Of The Year LADY'S SECRET and champions MEDAILLE D'OR and RISEN STAR. Other outstanding offspring included GENERAL ASSEMBLY , IMAGE OF GREATNESS, FIESTA LADY, PANCHO VILLA, TERLINGUA, ATHYKA, CLEVER SECRET, TINNERS WAY and many others. Even more impressive is the role-call of his daughters' produce. They include champions CHIEF'S CROWN, A.P. INDY, DEHERE, BORN WILD (in Austria), MIZORAM , CORREGIO (steeplechaser), and ISTABRAAQ (hurdler), and remarkable stakes winners LACOVIA, STORM CAT, CLASSIC CROWN, SECRETO, AL MAMOON, GONE WEST, SUMMER SQUALL, HONOR GRADES, LA GUERIERE, HEART OF JOY, CAPTIVE MISS, CHEROKEE ROSE, TA RIB, SPINNING ROUND, IRGUN, DARE AND GO, ATTICUS, HEART OF OAK, LISTENING, WELL CHOSEN, and so many others.
