Luigi: Mario's younger brother is almost an essential if you want a great Mario game. Though he only appears in a few games, when Luigi is around, I feel he makes a difference. He wears purple overalls with a green shirt instead of blue overalls with a red shirt. Some people say that Luigi can jump higher then Mario, but I believe that they are both equal.
Yoshi: Yoshi is Mario's steed in the game. This little green dinosaur really helps out the plumber when he's in a jam. Yoshi has the ability to eat creatures up and has a more powerful jump then Mario. In some games, there are different color Yoshi's each doing something different.
Princess Peach: Peach is the victim of almost every game. She is always getting kidnapped by Bowser and Mario, of course, comes to save her.
Bowser: Bowser is the villain of almost every game. Being a giant lizard with fire breathing powers and a spiky shell would make me evil any day.
Toad: This small character does not do much in the games but he does help Mario every now and then.
