Look For Multi-Effect Products & Natural Extracts

While there are a number of isolated compounds that are very beneficial to the skin, more and more research is showing the benefits of whole extracts of certain plants.  This is because whole extracts contain hundreds or even thousands of compounds naturally present in the plant instead of just one isolated ingredient.  Many of these compounds work in tandem to produce a broader range of results than just one isolate can.  Whole extracts often contain a combination of both familiar chemicals (such as Vitamins A, C, and E as well as polyphenols and bioflavonoids that provide antioxidant support to the skin) and other compounds that are unique to just that one plant (such as how the antioxidant Rosemaric Acid is only found in Rosemary Extract and the antioxidant Oleuropein is only found in Olive Leaf Extract).  Just like how science is discovering super-foods in nature that contain several different compounds to keep our bodies healthy so are we beginning to see evidence of super-extracts that contain a wide range of compounds that keep the skin young.
Likewise, consumers are now demanding more multi-functional products.  In the past most products contained just one to maybe a few active ingredients, which were often displayed prominently on the front of the package.  For instance, if a product was built just around Vitamin A this would be the only active ingredient with fillers, moisturizers, and texturizers making up the rest.  So while the active ingredient might bring about certain beneficial results, there is only so much change in the skin that one active can impart.  Now the bar has been raised by consumers to demand products that contain a wide range of active ingredients, and not just one or two, that each treat aging in the skin on a different level.  For instance, a superior eye area product doesnt just reduce dark circles, it also has ingredients that lessen wrinkles and protect against free radical damage.  So when shopping around for products its most wise to look for formulas that contain several active ingredients that perform on many different levels.  This will reduce the number of products you will need to buy and bring about the most optimal changes in the least amount of time.
