Burt�s Bees has built its reputation on purely natural products. This is one of the few companies that really means it when it calls its products natural. All of the products in this line are made from biological extracts, and most products even have a percentage rating on how much of the product is purely natural. This is a very high standard for a skin care company to keep and we applaud Burt�s Bees for being so committed to this.
However, there are some consequences to committing to a purely natural line. For instance, Burt�s Bees products face formula restrictions by not using preservatives. While they do use natural antioxidation compounds that act as preservatives because they keep oils from going rancid, there are no real solutions for water-containing formulas without using some form of synthetic preservative. So nearly all of the products in this line are oil-based with few, or in some cases no, water soluble ingredients. Because of this many of the formulas are very moisturizing but lack many of the ingredients that are needed to produce anti-aging results. So while we it's quite comendable of them for not using paraben or formaldehyde-releasing preservatives it also kind of shoots them in the foot by not using any anti-microbial preservatives because they are limited to only oil-soluble and alcohol-soluble active ingredients. But with most products under $25 this is a very inexpensive line with a very natural, safe philosophy. So while their anti-aging rating is more moderate they overall are an inexpensive choice for those that are looking for a good moisturizer and preventative line.
