FOR THE COMPETITOR: SEEKING A SUCCESS LEVEL

Everyone wants to be successful! And, success can happen if we make our choices realistically. Oh, we all dream a little and that is healthy. In fact, healthy dreaming helps us see more clearly what is within our reach. Here are some ideas that may help you to be successful in ski racing.

When you begin to set goals, make sure that you start with an inventory of yourself. Note your: body type, strength, aggressiveness and personal needs. Ask yourself: are you a natural athlete or an over-achiever? What is your confidence level? If you began ski racing between the ages of eight and eleven years old, most likely you can make a good assessment of these questions by the time you are fourteen or fifteen years old.

Once you complete a self-inventory, begin to set short-range attainable goals for yourself. As you move forward and continue your realistic self- assessment, long-range goals will begin to come to mind.

There are three important factors to keep in mind as you work towards your success level. Be attentive to these factors in order to maintain a realistic success level in your sport--for as long as you desire: Commitment. Confidence and Control.

Commitment means having a positive mental attitude, being loyal to physical training and seeking knowledge (Develop insight and understanding of the sport.)

Confidence means to believe in your ability level. (Don’t allow yourself to get too low with bad results. And, don’t get too high with good results.)

Control means developing emotional stability, both on and off the ski hill. All successful athletes are the masters of themselves within their sport. Take a look at other areas that will help you to reach and maintain a desired success level. For example: To learn physically, athletes need a clear mind. Athletes also need to use their ears to listen, their eyes to see and their mouths to speak.
