YMCA
Officials YMCA
officials
are used at all SJYD home meets.
The role of the officials is to
make sure
that all swimmers are
swimming
legal;
so that the meet is swum in
fairness. To become a YMCA
official
certification is
required.
Training
classes are
offered at various
locations and
times. Officials
function
on deck in the roles of referees,
starters, stroke and turn
judges,
and relay takeoff
judges.
Many
times multiple roles
are filled by
each
official.?>ml:namespace

/> Responsible
for
running each of our home meets.
Securing all timers and workers
for
each home meet; setting
up
for each home meet; etc.
This
position works closely
with the
coaching staff to insure
a
smooth meet. The meet
director can also function as the
starter for the meet. This
involves
running the Colorado timing
system. This system
interfaces with the
touch pads,
lane buttons and starting
stand. It records the
split and final
times for each
lane. These
times are transferred to meet
manager to record the times. The people
trained to use the
Colorado Timing
system will be responsible for
running it on the day of
the
meet. This
position works
closely with the
Meet Manager
Operator. The
meet
Manager Operator is responsible
for running the computer at our
home
meets. Hy-Tek's meet manager
is a
easy to use window based
program.
This
program records the times for
the
meets, and prints position
labels for
the ribbons. The times
are either
transferred from the
Colorado System or
manually
entered from the timers
times. To
become trained in Meet Manager
you
will need to sit through a meet
with one of our already trained
people. We
usually use 2 operators
at each
meet. This
involves
getting the swimmers lined up in
the proper order their events. A
marshalling
board is used to call
swimmers to
the marshalling
area. Typically they
are called 3-4
events prior to
their event.
When
swimmers arrive they
are given a
card with their name,
lane,
and event on it. The swimmers
are then lined-up by their lanes
and staged for the event. When the event
prior to theirs is
started they
will move to the end wall by their
lane. Form
here they
will move to the
starting blocks
when the previous event is
concluded and all swimmers are
out
of the water. The
Marshalling crew insures that the
above process runs smoothly.
Head
Timer The
Head
timer can be responsible for
instructing the timers in the
mechanics
of timing if directed to
do by the
meet director. Instructing the
timers insures
consistency in
times. During
the meet the head timer also has
two watches running on each event
in case
there is a problem with
the
watches in any lane.
Timer Timers
operate
stop watches which are started as
soon as the starting light
flashes. There are two
manual
timers for each lane. The
finish times are recorded on the
swimmers card and given to the
card
runner. If a swimmer is
disqualified the official will
request the card and write the
reason for
the DQ on it before the
card
runner gets the
card. Card
Runner This
person
collects the cards from the timers
on each lane after they have
written
the manual times on
them.
The
cards then are taken to
the meet
manager operator. If there is a
problem with the
Colorado times
these are entered in the meet
manager program and used as
the
official time. An older
sibling who is not swimming is a
good candidate for this.
