- Patrick's Point History -

Patrick's Point is located 32 miles North of Eureka ("I found it") along California's coast. The park offers a variety of things to do for a family during their vacation in the summer months. Patrick's Point is mainly know for it's great beach where every guest combs the terrain for agates. Besides cruising the beach, Patrick's Point also offers great hikes for all ages, boring scenic hikes for adults and deadly rock climbing hikes for the extremist. Oh, and don't forget the sand hill. Patrick's Point State Park has been in existence for many many years. It all began when a young man named Axel Lindgren was blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Ok so who cares how the park started. Check out the real history, the Van Der Kamp History, of Patrick's Point State Park.

1984

The Van Der Kamp family started camping at Patrick's Point by accident around 1984. They were on vacation in August when THE jeep broke down (what else is new?) and were close by Patrick's .Point where many friends from church were staying, so they stopped, and stayed. They liked it so much so they decided to come back the next year...and the next... and the next... and, well, you get the picture.

1985 - 1989

Things were the same from 1985-1986. The Van Der Kamp boys were taught the basics about Patrick's Point. You know, the important stuff like the original 'Rope Trail', the wild animals that lived in the forest by Ceremonial Rock, how to sand ski, and were also taught to hate the Rim Trail. In 1987, things changed for the better when Micah invited a fellow Yankee to P.Point. Greg made an appearance that year, learned the basics, then faded away for the next year, but returned again in 1989 for the long haul.

1990 - 1998

Starting in the late eighties a great P.Point tradition started, the Beach Bowl. A two day football game on agate beach. The first two years were Josh and Carl vs. Micah and Greg, both of which were won by the former. We then knew that things needed to be changed, so Greg and Josh teamed up...and won. Things had to be changed the next year, and Micah and Josh won. By this time, four years of the Beach Bowl had gotten to Carl, who was now 46, and so ended the Beach Bowl, but was to be followed by an even greater tradition, with an even greater rivalry...

1999 - Present

The Agate Beach series landed in the summer of 1994 with, again, Josh and Carl teamed up against Greg and Micah. The game started out very crude, with sticks used as foul lines and for the home run fence. In 1995, a makeshift fence was created using sticks for the foul poles with colored wire strung out between them. The next year, the fence was improved yet again, this time trash bags hung over the wires creating a solid fence, but wind was a problem. In 1997, the field had an awesome fence, an orange construction fence which worked perfectly making the field, and the game, look genuine. In the inaugural series, best of 3, Josh and Carl took it 2 games to 1, with Carl being the MVP with excellent pitching success. In '95, Greg and Micah got their revenge, winning 2 games to 1. The final game was the game of the century, with it going into extra innings. Micah broke up the 12-12 tie with a game winning homerun in the 19th inning, thus winning MVP honors. In 1996, Greg and Micah took it to the father-son combo yet again, but they needed 3 games to do it. The third game was ended with a 22-9 score with Micah winning the MVP again throwing 12 scoreless innings in the final. 1997 and '98 were dismal years for the series, '97 wind reduced the series to only one game. The excitement and the crowds just weren't there. Then in 1998, the series became more for fun, and less for pride, the end of another great tradition...and the beginning of another?1996 gave hints of another great tradition. Micah picked up the game of golf, which made the annual golf game the McKinleyville Open. The next year it became a battle after Micah won the tournament. Never wanting to be shown up, Josh won in 1998. Check out the McKinleyville Open at Beau Pre website for more info
