Odds
- June 28th, 2008 - Greg's clubs were stolen earlier in the year and he is sporting
some brand new million-gazillion-bubvillion dollar clubs. We'll see if he can play with them.
Neither Josh nor Micah have many rounds under their belts, but Josh has been known to take
a trip or two to Haggin and midnight to practice. Carl is out almost every week to Cherry Island
and is in the 48-55 range. The early, "opening-gate" odds are as follows: Carl-105;
Greg 97; Josh-94; Micah-97
- July 20th, 2008 - Greg wanted to make sure that the Board of Directors got wind of the scores
from his latest two rounds up at the lake...86 and 96. While the 86 was good, the 96 was more impressive
in that he played a poor round but managed to keep it under 100. We'll leave his odds at a
solid 97.
- July 21st, 2008 - Greg and Josh hit up some course out in the Roseville area and called as they
where exiting the course to provide real-time results. After some standard Josh BS, it was stated
that Greg shot 102 and Josh 104. Interesting. Both players shot worse then would have been expected.
Greg has had some very good play as of late and Josh always manages to shoot below 100, even if it is
an off day. It could all be due to the difficulty of the course (and the number of balls that were
lost), but still the odds have to be changed. Josh lost about 7 balls or so, so take that away from his
score and he would have had a 97. Josh doesn't often lose balls at the Open, so we will only increase
his projected score to 95. Greg managed to beat Josh, which is impressive (most impressive), so we'll
just chalk up the 102 to the difficulty. Greg's projected score goes down to 96.
- July 24th, 2008 - Pending any complaints, it has been confirmed by Don Harling that the
2008 McKinleyville Open will take place on Wednesday, August 6th at 8:00am, the night after
Greg flies in to McKinleyville.
- July 25th, 2008 - Micah was able to attain a free round of golf out at Teal Bend, His group
didn't tee of until 4:40 so they were only able to get 15 holes in, but he shot 46 on the front
nine and was looking to shoot about that on the back nine, so he would've finished somehwhere
between 90 and 95. A good showing to be sure, but we'll leave his odds as is, at 97, pending
the outcome of the tune-up tomorrow.
- July 26th, 2008 - Carl provided updates on some of his recent rounds at Cherry Island.
Over the past few weeks his shot 46, 48, and 52...or scores something like that, and not necessarily
in that order. That's some fairly consistent play for him, so we'll drop his projected score
down to 104.
- July 28th, 2008 - Carl, Josh, and Micah played the 6th annual McKinleyville
tune-up at Wildhawk. Carl had a tough go at it and struggled off the tee on most holes. His play
after his first shot was decent, but he finished with a 109. We'll drop Carl's projected score
back to 105. Josh didn't play too bad, except for his attrocious (how do you spell that)...
umm...really bad putting. As discussed on the course, it seemed as though he was trying
to miss his putts. Regardless, Josh shot 52-47-99. He started putting a little better at the
end so we'll leave his odds at 95. Micah played some good golf, despite his bad
putting as well. He shot 45-45-90, drove well and had some good approach shots, and could have
shot much better had it not been for his 43 total putts. This is two good rounds for Micah
so we have no choice but to lower his odds down to 95.
- July 30th, 2008 - Pairing Alert...Pairing Alert...There have been rumors circulating about
the pairing. Despite what you may have heard, the final pairing were not decided until this
evenings meeting of the Board of Directors. For the second straight year Greg and Micah will
pair up and will look another victory against Carl and Josh. Josh's play, of late, brought
the pairings into question, but you cannot question his recent performances at the Open
(87,87,93). Final odds will be posted on Saturday, once results are in from the Greg Werner
birthday tune-up featuring Greg and Josh at Ancil Hoffman.
- August 2nd, 2008 - Final Odds...Final Odds...Greg and Josh played a final-final tune-up
on Friday at Ancil Hoffman. Both played decent, Greg shot 98 and Josh 97. Carl played again
this week at Cherry Island, and rumor has it that he shot close to 45. Micah didn't play at
all; apparently he thinks that he is good to go. So, the following are the projected scores
for the players at the 2008 McKinleyville Open. Carl 104, Greg 97,
Josh 95, Micah 95. Good luck to all of the players!

Epilogue
Just hours after the completion of the Open, here is your recap
The 2008 McKinleyville Open was one for the record books, and while it was decided early who would take the Axel Lindgren trophy home, it wasn’t until the 18th hole when the title of low overall score was decided.
Coming into the Open it wasn’t clear what would happen. Josh hadn’t been playing particularly well (his putting had been atrocious), and the other three players were playing decent. They all teed off just before 8am (PST) and all started off the same as always, without a par to be found. Micah duffed his drive on #2 while Carl had a killer drive, but the two of them had problems getting across the water. Carl hit a worm-burner that skipped across the water about 8 times and we have been okay if the water wasn’t outlined with a retaining wall. The two of them posted quadrouple bogey’s wh ile Greg made a par.
Things continued poor for Carl as he had problems getting off the tee on the par 4 3rd. He wasn’t able to get his next few shots in the air and finished with a triple. Micah was able to rebound with a 5, which matched with Greg’s bogey and Josh’s double put G&M up by 3 strokes. Josh made up for it on the first par three of the day and made a great birdie, as memory serves he made a long putt.; the man is simply clutch on all par three’s at Beau Pre. Three of the contestants had a little problem with the uphill par 5 as Carl posted another quad and Josh and Micah shot double, but Greg’s bogey put G&M up by 6. Continued good play by G&M put them up by 9 strokes after the par 3 6th (as Josh wasn’t to grab another lucky bounce in the trees) but things changed on the downhill par 5.
Micah and Greg teed off first and both hit terrible drives while Carl and Josh stepped it up with solid shots off the tee. Greg and Micah had problems getting down the hill and finished 8 and 9. Josh had a great hole, made his birdie putt, and Carl was able to post a double. When the players walked off the green it had been a 6 shot swing as Carl and Josh pulled within three strokes; it was exactly what the pair needed. Unfortunately for them, G&M stepped it up on the 8th shooting bogey-par while C&J stumbled shooting quad-double; G&M were back up by 8. C&J were able to pick up a stroke on the 9th, but they went into the turn down by 7.
Please note, the following commentary could be completely wrong as it is currently 2 ½ months after completion of the open
Micah and Greg could smell the blood and decided to attack on number 10. Micah picked up a par, Greg a bogey, but Josh and Carl had trouble and didn’t get into the hole until 8 strokes had passed. The blood was good and Greg and Micah were up by 12. The 11th hole was similar to the 10th as Greg and Micah picked up 2 more strokes and obtained the largest every lead at the McKinleyville Open, 16 strokes. Approaching the tee box in #12, this prompted Micah to comment, “So, what are we going to do to next year so this ass whoopin’ doesn’t happen again?
This must have prompted all of the players to bear down and start playing better as there were on 4 scores of double-bogey or worse from that point on. It was all for not for Carl and Josh though. Micah shot par on holes 14-16 and Greg did the same on two of them, and despite a birdie for Carl on one of those holes and a birdie from Josh on another, Greg and Micah kept their lead large at 15.
While the trophy was firmly in the grasps of Greg and Micah, it was still yet to be determined who would shoot the lowest this year. At the #17 tee box, Josh was at 80, Greg was at 83, and Micah was at 82; Carl was there too. Josh had the advantage as it seems as though he always finished par-par given that Micah never makes par on the short par 3 and Greg always blows up on the 18th, but that was not the case…or the whole case. Josh did get par on the 17th and Micah shot bogey, essentially taking his name out of the hat, but Greg came in with a par to match Josh’s. Then, somehow or another, Greg made birdie on the final hole to post an 89. Had Josh shot double-bogey the open would have witnessed the first ever playoff, but he shot par and beat Greg by 1 stroke. Micah and Carl also finished with a bogey. In the end Greg shoots 89, Micah 91, Carl 110, and Josh shoots the lowest with yet another score under 90, 88 this time. But, Greg and Micah retain the trophy as they win by a record 18 strokes.
It was a great open, but obviously something needs to be done about the format or Greg needs to shoot a little closer to his average. Different parings wouldn’t have mattered since Greg, Josh, and Micah were all within 3 strokes. Perhaps a return to the handicap format? We shall see in the 2009 McKinleyville Open.
Tournament Notes: No one posted a par on the 1st hole, and with the exception of 2007 when both Carl and Josh shot par, not a single par has ever been made. Micah shot a record low 39 on the back nine. Greg is the first person besides Josh to ever shoot under 90. A record number of birdies were posted this year; 5.
