A change is slated for the 2002 McKinleyville Open. In late 2001, the Board of Directors decided to make the tournament a team event instead of individual. The winners will be determined by adding each individual score together with his teammate. The lowest total score between the two teams wins. Because there will now be two winners, another trophy will have to purchased... The only item that remains to be determined is what the teams will be. In early March, the board decided that, for this first year at least, the team will be the players who placed 1st and 4th from the previous year vs. 2nd and 3rd. Another option was to wait until a month before the open and determine the pairings based on how each player was shooting. That option is out for now, and the first will be the one to be used. It will also be an issue to be reviewed if two or more players tie one year. This means that the 2002 McKinleyville Open will be Josh and Greg vs. Micah and Carl. If this system was utilized last year, Josh and Greg would have won by 5 strokes, 201 - 206. The Open this year will be sometime from August 3 - August 11. It is a strong possibility that the event itself will take place on one of the weekend days because of contestants prior obligations.

The McKinleyville Open 2002 was full of surprises. Did anyone expect Josh to shoot 12 shots worse this year than last? Did anyone expect that only one person would break 100? Did anyone expect the winning score to be 206? These things weren't expected, but they happened. To keep things basic and to sum up, it can be said that everyone played bad in 2002. On the front nine, the only bright spots were Josh's par on #3, and Greg's par on #8. Carl and Micah were up by as many as 6 strokes on the front nine, but Josh and Greg slowly caught up and took the lead by two strokes after #8 thanks to Greg's par. Unfortunately, Josh hit a tree three times on number 9 and Carl and Micah regained the lead of 2 after 9 holes. he back nine started out worse than the front. On the par 5 10th, Micah shot a double while everyone else shot 9's. By the 14th, Carl and Micah has extended their lead to 8 strokes, but Josh and Greg weren't finished yet. They knocked off two strokes on the14th and were only 6 back with 4 to play. The teams equaled each other on the 15th and Josh and Greg had a chance to break through on the 16th. Three players had decent tee shots, but Carl stood up on his and hit it into the creek. His second shot went into that same creek, though the team of Josh and Greg wasn't aware of it. Carl went on to shoot a quad. Josh and Greg each took doubles and could have gained at least two strokes had it not been for Micah's open saving par. Two holes to go and Carl and Micah were still leading by 6. Josh and Greg still had hope, especially after they each landed on the green on the par 3 17th and Carl and Micah were each just off the green. After some tense moments, Josh ended with par and the other three tapped in for bogeys. The open was all but over. Josh tried to make it close with a birdie on the 18th, but Carl shot par and Micah bogey to shut the door. Carl obtained the McKinleyville Open trophy for the first time, Micah regained it, Josh lost it, and Greg still dreams of it. The team format worked out well this year but it remains to be seen if the format will still be around in the 2003 McKinleyville Open. Stay tuned... |
