Coffee

Extended another week!!!!!

Organic

-November 13th through 16th PRIZES!

Short Film

-Party at Julian's (and Zach lives there). First screening of the film preceding the actual film festival: October 15.
-The movie is about the planet, somehow!

E-Waste

-If we solicit the whole District 3 community as opposed to just San Jose State we could make upwards of 1000 or 1500 dollars. E-Waste recycled can generate a very decent amount of money.
-The best place to do it would be the San Jose State Park and Ride.
-Not a lot of room in 7th street plaza. -Dennis Suit can donate a whole bunch of ee-waste if we ask for it and offer to take it from him for free.
-If it is at the park ride we still need aapproval from the school.
-We need FLIERS and PRESS RELEASES. Spartan Daily.
-Fraternity houses.
-We need an external meeting for this projject to discuss further.

T-Shirts

-50 T-Shirts total!
-One color is 150 dollars for all of the sshirts.
-Two color shirt! Blue background—whhite and green design. Front design.
-Down payment—less than half of the price.
-250 dollars and 50 cents to spend on thiss!
-Sponsors on the t-shirt
-Bicycle shops
-Ask downtown businesses (but it's hard, aapparently).
-Environmentally friendly restaurants
-The actual shirt needs to be decided and 1 color for the sponsors on the back.
-Current T-Shirt program will continue desspite suggestions for sponsored shirts.

-SD is already working on a healthy food program. Working with a registered dietitian.

-Price should not go up so far that studennts complain.

-Do you know what organic food is?

Organic Food and Fair Trade

-What is fair trade? What is organic? Whatt is shade grown?
-What can you do page.

-Synthetic Pesticides.
-Sulfur is a decent natural pesticide and does not pollute the food.
-Organic means:
-No genetics.
-No petroleum products.
-No fabricated.
-Must be certified.
-Three classifications.
-USDA waters down their organic requiremennts.
-If it says 100% organic, it must be organnic.
-USDA 95% organic.
-Natural means nothing synthetic (arsenic and plutonium are natural!)
-Fair Trade:
-Farmer received a "living wage" for theirr effort.
-Fair trade pencils and baskets.
-Commercial coffee: 40 – 50 cents peer pound.
-Fair trade: 1.20 per pound and 1.40 per ppound if organic.
-Fair trade programs give growers loans soo that they can achieve the certification process.
-Usually it costs more, but it is the truee price, but it's the correct price and benefits humans more than protecting one's pocket.
-Cocoa, coffee, bananas, etc. Shade tree mmethod.
-Provides food for everyone and in a naturral habitat and survive well with the environment.
-Cocoa grows slower, but coffee tastes bettter that way.
-How to pass a fair trade resolution? How to pass an organic food resolution?

-Free Trade is not Fair Trade.
-Free Trade is not a bad idea, but it servves and delivers a lower standard for the sake of competitiveness.

Organic Food

-Santa Cruz already has ties set up with farmers; we will work with them to gain these same connections to our school.
-How would SJSU meal plan be different? -Students who eat the food will already bee living here.
-The plan will make Spartan dining more atttractive, healthy, and good for organic farmers.
-Organic is truly around the same price ass the chemically treated plants.
-Taking food directly from farms; no thirdd party.
-San Jose can become another Santa Cruz inn the quality of food.
-Spartan Dining will want to know exact prrices and we will have to convince Spartan Dining to be willing to not raise prices.
-We are having a meeting with SD to let thhem know about our project before we act.

-Starbucks and poorly paid local farms.
-Not much domestic coffee available. Southh America and Africa support most of the coffee.
-Fair Trade coffee supports poorly paid faarmers better money for their product.
-Finding out the integrity of coffee dealeers is important.
-Have a dialogue with coffee vendors on caampus.
-We are aiming to have all of Spartan Diniing to support and buy fair trade coffee.

-Fair Trade, by definition, is more expenssive.

Fred-Wants a contact for a local natural foods store in SJ.

Amie - Garden workday this Saturday at Children's Discovery Museum. Building a pond. Needs volunteers. Every 3rd Saturday.

Julian - birthday party this Friday at his apartment.

Julia – Bake sale on 20th of Feb. Baking party this Sunday at Julian’s.  Bake sale is Monday 9:30 -3:30, table #6.  Julia sent around schedule for both donations and tabling.  Email Julia if you can bring something or help
at the table.  Chris will bring waxed paper baggies to package in the am.

David - Pinnacles Nat’l monument. We have 2 campsites for 12 people. Please contact David. If you want to go.  He is sending around a list in the meeting for signups.  Next week David will bring times and more specifics. Its March 18-19th, we will pull invasive weeds and camp Saturday night. Signup so far: David, Julia, Julia, Amanda, Natsumi, Amie.

Chris -  Surveys  Still to be done:  TKara, Julian, Julia, and two others. Please email results to Chris if you still have surveys..

Tabling – Went well last week, sold 3 t-shirts, got people to sign up. We want to do more tabling. Tabling March 1st and 2nd. Signup next week.

Coffee – Market and Tully do sell FT/organic. Dining commons has no coffee. Village market is Starbucks.  Amie read a brochure about Fair Trade coffee. Chris will put a link on the website with Fair Trade info. Kilen and Julia are managers.  We should make a display. We will also try to have a meeting with Spartan Dining and Jazzland.  Look into fair trade sellers (Chris)

Julian – Student Advocating Global Education. March 20th, school protest and walkout on the anniversary of the Shock and we campaign in Iraq.  They had the first meeting last week.  The EC is endorsing it.  Meetings are 4pm Tuesday in the Costanoan room. The EC can make a display/poster about the environmental aspects of war.

T-shirts – People want more t-shirts, but we have to buy a minimum order number and pay upfront.  We will hold off on a new order, and revisit it in a month or so.  We are interested in shirts for Earth Day, but still to be
decided.

Kilen – Thank yous. We are sending thank yous to the campus people that helped us with the Wall of Cups project.  We have a card made from recycled elephant dung. We will include a photo, the cards were signed by all the members.

Earth Day – Amanda – The Environmental Resource Center is commissioning Mike Huen to make a logo to be used on advertising for Earth Day.  We should have info on the ERC and the Center of Development of Recycling for tabling events.

Amie – CSA’s, email Amie or Chris if you are interested in buying from a local CSA.

Event sheets, blank forms on the discussion files. Fill out for every club event. Project manager is in charge

Amie – SMART and Fair Trade Faire, we are taking on project of trying to get Jazzland there selling FT coffee.  They do rotate an organic and a FT coffee. We want to suggest tat they sell it full time.  We can have a petition to sign and commit to purchases.  We should have educational signs at Jazzland to tell people why FT and Organic are important. 

Amie – Fair trade coffee on campus. We are going to ask campus vendors if they sell or can sell FT/O. If not we will have a campaign to encourage sales.

Bake Sale - Julia, Monday 2/20. Kilen reserved table (# ).  We will have a baking party at Amanda house in South San Jose (Santa Theresa light rail). Julian will also host a baking party.  We will do signup for table and baking next meeting.  T’Kara and Julian will make a sign for the table.

Earth Day – Amanda -  They want organizations to come to campus to promote env items.  The theme is alternative energy, or something similar. They will have Santa Clara county people to talk about gardening/composing/worm bins. Kilen – campus sustainability assessments. SJSU ranks one of the lowest CSU’s in the terms of energy efficiency.  Amie – The EC needs a presence at earth day, we will have computers available to find out ecological footprints for students. 

Footprint – Kilen will look in to downloading program. Laptops, we can rotate them.  Rent the AS tent thing.  We will plan it in a future meeting.

We will have 2 tables at Earth Day

MOSAIC affiliation – Agnes brought the form, we need to complete and submit it.

Tabling – Kilen reserved wed and thurs 10:30 -2 Weds Table #3., Thursday #6. 

Compost workshop – This Saturday, put on by city. They teach home composting and sell subsidized bins.

Ryan – new item. Children's Discovery museum river cleanup. Getting supplies bags, gloves, sticks.  Around end of April.

Amanda - Earth day projects for EC – Develop Logo, motto, theme for Earth Day 2006. Amanda is the ERC assistant director, she will be our liaison with the ERC and help us coordinate the Earth Day activities.

David - Pinnacles Natl monument – Remove invasive non native plants. March 18th and 19th.  12 people, need to send to list to find other interested people.

Julia - Bake sale, Monday February 20th. Julia will reserve a table. Setup from 9:00-9:30, Start 10:00am, go till 3:00pm.

Chris – T-shirts, $15 dollars each. There are extras available.

Agnes – She will complete the MOSAIC affiliation application. We are promoting multiculturalism, social justice, building student leaders. 

Dues – Voluntary dues $10, please bring next meeting.

Agnes - CITRUS – Showcase house for sustainability.  Showing the Future of Food, in Santa Clara.  Wednesday 2/1 7:00pm. Community initiative to restore urban sustainability.  Affiliated with Santa Clara University

Surveys – Handed out sets of 30, volunteers will tabulate forms and email to Chris

Discussion – solar for SJSU, Can we get solar on Clark hall?  Residence halls?

Renew CSU proposal sets goals for renewable energy. We should find out RenewCSU target and promote in the school.
