William Rapier Ravenhill CroweWilliam Rapier Ravenhill Crowe was born in the village of Hanley Castle, Worcestershire, most probably in 1829. He was the eldest son of William Raper Crowe and Abigail Ravenhill, who were married at the church of St. John The Baptist, Mathon, Worcestershire on 5 February 1829. Mathon was the home village of the Ravenhill family.
Early years
WRRC was baptised at St. Mary’s church, Hanley Castle, Worcestershire, on 28 May 1830. In the Parish Records he is entered as William Raper Ravenell, son of William and Abigail Crowe.
The next reference to WRRC is in the 1841 census, taken on 6th June 1841, which is the first surviving British census giving the names of all people in a household. Other details in the census are limited. Ages of adults were rounded down to the nearest 5 below (e.g. if aged 44 your age would be recorded as 40). Relationships are not given. There is no place of birth, only if the person is born in the county (Y for yes, N for no). The listed occupations are also limited. Despite this we find out that WRRC is living with his parents and siblings at Roberts End Street, Hanley Castle, Worcestershire. The blue (D.O.B from age) is my addition to this and other census transcripts in this document. WRRC had two younger brothers (John Matthew George Crowe and Thomas Matthew Crowe), and two younger sisters (Ann Ravenhill Crowe and Elizabeth Crowe), all listed in the 1841 census below.
Name Sex Age D.O.B from age Occupation Born in County
William Crowe M 40 1796-1801 Independent Y
Abigail Crowe F 30 1806-1811 Y
William Crowe M 11 1829/30 Y
John Crowe M 9 1831/32 Y
Thomas Crowe M 7 1833/34 Y
Anne Crowe F 3 1837/38 Y
Elizabeth Crowe F 11 months July 1840 Y
1841 Census HO 107/1205-170By the time of the 1851 census, taken on 30th March, there had been a major change to the Crowe household. WRRC’s mother is listed as a widow, and her mother (also a widow) is staying with the family. WRRC and his two brothers had left home, but his two sisters are still with their mother, at the new address of Swan Green, Hanley Castle, Worcestershire. I have not been able to trace WRRC or his brothers yet in the 1851, 1861, or 1871 census. There is no mention of WRRC’s father in the Hanley Castle burial register between 1841 and 1851.

1851 Census HO 107/Hanley Castle, page 8First Marriage
WRRC was married twice. I will need a bit of luck to track down his first marriage, as it would probably have taken place where his bride lived or where she grew up. We don’t even know her name. WRRC would have been at least 18 when he married, so the wedding would be after 1847. I have traced a William Raper Crowe marriage on 11 March 1852 at St. James, Paddington, London, to an Esther Slatter. This might be a red herring, but I will send for a marriage certificate to check it out. We know from the family that WRRC’s first wife died during childbirth, so I will also check for a death certificate for an Esther Crowe.
Second Marriage
WRRC was married on 7 February 1872 at the Wesleyan Chapel, Ledbury, Herefordshire. He is listed as William Raper Ravenhill Crowe, Widower, Farmer, living at West Malvern, Mathon, age 35. His father is listed as William Raper Crowe, Gentleman. Sometimes you get ‘deceased’ written the father if he is dead, but not always. The marriage certificate lists WRRC’s wife as Martha Elizabeth Hartle, spinster, Domestic Servant, living at West Malvern, Mathon, age 23. Her father is listed as John Hartle, Nail manufacturer. Interestingly WRRC put his age as 35, and not 43. The witnesses to the marriage are John Hartle and Jane Hartle.
WRRC’s wife, Martha Elizabeth Hartle, was born on 12 April 1849 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, and baptised on 6 May 1849 at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Bromsgrove. Her parents were John and Sarah Hartle. Martha had at least ten younger siblings (four brothers and six sisters). The family knew her as ‘Granny Crowe’.
A note about Mathon, Worcestershire. The parish of Mathon included the community of West Malvern, which grew in size during the 1800’s. In the 1860’s a new church was built in West Malvern (St. James), and at some time after that a separate parish was formed. If you lived in West Malvern during this time your address could be given as West Malvern, Mathon, or both. To complicate matters Mathon parish was ‘transferred’ to Herefordshire in 1897, so parish and census records are split between Hereford Record office and Worcester Record office. The census records for Mathon for 1851, 1861, and 1871 are kept at Hereford. I expect to find listings of WRRC and Martha Hartle in the Mathon 1871 census.
Children of WRRC and Martha Hartle
The couples first child was a boy named Jonah Crowe, who was born in late 1872, or very early 1873, but died at birth. The birth was not registered, which is not unusual.
Effie Martha Crowe was born on 8 Oct 1873, in West Malvern, in the parish of Mathon, Worcestershire. From the Birth Certificate the birth was registered on 8 Nov 1873 by William RR Crowe, father, West Malvern, Mathon. Father William Raper Ravenhill Crowe, Mother Martha Elizabeth Crowe, formerly Hartle. Occupation of father (WRRC) - Lodging House Keeper.
I have not yet looked for the Birth Certificates of the other children of WRRC, but hope to work through them sometime later this year.1881 Census
(Taken on the evening of Sunday 3 April 1881)
From the 1881 census we learn that in 1877 or 1878 WRRC and family had moved from West Malvern / Mathon, Worcestershire, to the village of Alfrick, Worcestershire. There is no individual address, just the general ‘Alfrick Village’, but from other census entries we know the family were living between Winger Cottage, Alfrick, and The Beck, Alfrick.Name Relation to Head of Family Sex Condition as to Marriage Profession or Occupation Age last Birthday (D.O.B from age) Where Born

I have also found out that Effie Martha Crowe, age 7, was staying with her uncle and aunt, James Clews Hartle and Eliza Hartle at Vicarage Road, Kings Norton, Worcestershire.1891 Census
Between August 1889 and the time of the 1891 census, taken on the evening of 5 April, the family had moved to Black House, Black House Lane, Suckley, near Alfrick, Worcestershire.

I have also found Effie Martha Crowe in the 1901 census, staying / living at 52 Napier Road, Tottenham, Middlesex, London, where she was a Domestic Housemaid, age 27. Ernest Crowe was staying / living at 97 Cornwall Road, St. John’s, Lambeth, London, where he is listed as a carpenter, age 27. Harry Crowe was staying / living at Jubilee New Cottages, Mottingham Lane, Eltham, Woolwich, London, where he is listed as a cowman, age 20. So far I have not been able to find Thomas Crowe in the 1901 census.
The 1901 census is the last one available (the 1911 census will be released in 2011).
From the wedding report in the Radnorshire Express of Effie Martha Crowe and Samuel George Craddock on 3 Jan 1903 we learn that Mr and Mrs W. Crowe live at Upper House, Willey, near Presteigne, and that they recently came to reside in the neighbourhood. We know from the family that WRRC did not attend the wedding because he did not approve of the bridegroom, he thought he was a ‘wimp-city slicker’!
