Scientists are pretty much like all people in the essence that they like to have fun. Lunatic fringe, head case and one-eyed pinhead are only three out of countless absurd examples by which scientists name the genes they discover. However, the fun and games end when a doctor has to tell a parent her child has a mutation of the Sonic hedgehog gene. Most people would consider this a joke and immediately seek a new doctor only to hear once again that the child has a mutation of the Sonic hedgehog gene. Many consider it inappropriate to give quirky gene names that originate in animals like fruit flies and mice to humans, especially if the gene might lead to serious defects. The official name of a gene can only be changed by the scientist who discovered it, and most people dont want someone else telling them how to name their discoveries. So the drama continues and it looks like Sonic hedgehog will remain the name of this gene for a very long time to come (Schwartz, 2006).
