Members
Membership is open to any full time students at St. Joseph's College
who maintains a 2.0 GPA. It is open to all levels of riding from
beginner to advanced. You do not need prior riding experience to join
the team.
Tryouts
The team accepts all who are willing to fulfill the requirments. If the
number exceeds 15, there will be tryouts based upon ability at every
level.
New Members
New members have a two week trial in which they will be required to pay
for their practices. The first 4 practices (2 weeks) will be included
in a new member fee of $250. This fee also includes the price of your
team jacket, polo shirt and hat.
Equipment
All members must have proper riding equipment provided at their own
expense. This equipment must be approved by the coach. Names of local
riding stores are available upon request. Team jackets, hats, and polo
shirts must be brought to and worn at all intercollegiate horse shows.
Physical Fitness
Team members must remember that they are athletes along with their
equine partners and must make every effort to remain physically fit.
The school's athletic trainer will be available to set up strength and
conditioning programs for the team. Complete physicals are required
annually before practice begins in September.
Practices
Members will ride twice weekly, as a team on Fridays and one other day
during the week to be arranged with the coach. Members will be expected
to be at practice half an hour before and after they ride to take care
of the horse they are riding. If for any reason a member is unable to
attend a practice, they must personally notify the coach prior to the
practice, to arrange a makeup. If you miss 3 practices, you will be
responsible for all training and showing fees for the remainder of the
season.
Horse Shows
Team members are expected to compete if the coach determines they are
ready. If a member is not yet ready or for some other reason cannot
ride in the show, they are still expected to be present to support
their fellow team mates. If for any reason they are not able to ride in
any show they must let the coach know at least 3 weeks in advance of
that competition. Failure to inform the coach will result in the riders
responsibility to pay for their entry fees. Horse shows are held in the
fall and spring, roughly ten horse shows a year. The majority of shows
are held on Sundays.
Although St. Joseph's College is very generous with our budget, we are
still limited. St. Joseph's College pays horse show expenses for team
members and a good portion of training fees. The team is required to
fundraise to help offset these expenses along with the expenses to run
our annual St. Joseph's College Intercolligiate Horse Show held each
October.
In keeping with St. Joseph's College motto, "To Be and Not to Seem," we
as a team strive for excellence in horsemanship. We strive to set an
example of good sportsmanship to other teams, and to show the utmost
respect to the horses that allow us to participate in this wonderful
sport.
