It helps to read the experiences of other families. You have been through a lot more than us. Our little Lizzy is 2 yrs. old and has spina bifida. What a blessing she has been for our family! She is our 6th child and never has a little sister been loved m re by her siblings! Next week she is having surgery to try to correct reflux of urine up into her kidneys. I'm not looking forward to it, but I can see from your stories that God will give me the strength to get through it. I am a senior in high school and I am doing a research project in English class on Down's Syndrome. It is nice to hear about a family so loving that they are not ashamed of the appearance of their children. This is one thing I don't see very much. Thank you for sharing the stories of your children. I just learned a few minutes ago that my first grandson, who was born yesterday, has Downs Syndrome and similar heart problems as your Allison. His heart surgery is what frightens us most although he presently has infections that must be identified and treated. Fortunately my son lives in Houston where they have some of he best childrens hospitals in the world. Before I even made transportation plans to go to Houston I felt that I needed to know something more about Downs Syndrome. Your site was the first that I came to. The Doctors told my son that they have about ninty per cent success rate with this type of heart surgery. My concern was how my grandson would survive until he is old enough to have the surgery. Your experiences with Allison's congestional heart failure provides me with vital information that I can pass on to my son and daughter-in-law. If or when my grandson has such symptoms, we may be more knowlegeable of what to expect. I feel much more at ease after seeing that Allison survived as much as she had to go through. I have a 17-year old daughter with spina bifida. She is a great kid with a lot of spunk. She is a junior in high school and has a part-time job at old navy. we're just getting ready to start the driving thing. She is totally independent in transferring from her wheelchair, doing her catheterizations bathing,etc. the only thing we need to work on is her bowel program. right now we do tap water enema every 3rd day.. she gets some crampy feelings when she has to have a b.m. most of the time. we were thi king of switching to a daily stool softener and see if she can go on her own. if anyone has any further ideas that can help us let me know. it's great that there is a web page for some moral support and hopefully we can help each other through our wexpe iences.

hey Scott, finally got your page to come up, could'nt get it for a few days for some reason. My husband and I just went through it, some pretty touching stories. Your children are very lucky to have parents like you. My brother-in-law and sister-in-law are going through a pretty hard time right now, they just had a baby girl born last week that was 3 months early (2lb 3oz) so I'm sure they are going to experiance some of the same things you have with spending time in the hospital. They told them that s e would not get to come home before January for sure. She has a whole in her heart, and she has bleeding in the brain, which they said was like an adult having a stroke. I just hope they can be as strong as you and your wife have been with all that you ave been through with Sissy. My cousin was born with Hydroencephilitis and spina bifida...she too has a shunt going from her brain to her stomach...as with your special child. Kimberly is always smiling and happy. She recently has surgery to allow a brace to go from her lower back do n to her feet so that she can walk when the need it great, (she was in a wedding and used the brace) otherwise, she is content to stroll in her go-cart, as we call it, or just mosey along using her hands and feet...she is such a pleasure to have around.
