When we were still active, we were accepting applications for new members to join the Yarmouth Brigade, as well as the Cadet Division. To join our youth division, you had to be between the ages of eleven and fifteen, while you had to be aged sixteen and older to join the adult division. At the time that the Cadet division disolved, most of our cadets were older than 16, but had joined when they were 11 or so.
The adult division met on every other Wednesday night, between 6:30pm and 9:00pm. An adult member had to have a current Standard First Aid certificate or equivalent and CPR Level C to join. All members' eighteen years and older were also required to have a police security clearance performed prior to joining the brigade. The Yarmouth RCMP had provided this service to St. John Ambulance at no charge. The current requirement is that all members must have successfully completed a Medical First Responders course, and because of that, most of our members were unable to complete the course (due to physical limitations) or did not want or have the time to.
The youth division (Cadets) originally met on Saturdays, then switched to Wednesday nights for a while. Before disolving, they met on Sunday nights at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. The only pre-requisite for joining Cadets was a willingness to learn and a little bit of spare time to spend volunteering.
All of the divisions maintained year round training to ensure that all Brigade members held a high level of skill while out on public duties.
Once you had decided that you wanted to join St. John Ambulance as a volunteer, your next step was to contact us. At your first meeting you would have been asked to complete an application form and a police security clearance form.
If you are interested in setting up a St. John Ambulance Community First Aid Volunteer or Medical First Response group in the Yarmouth area, you should contact the Head Office and speak with someone there about it.
