What is St. John Ambulance?
St. John Ambulance is a national voluntary agency founded in Canada 115 years ago. Our mission is to enable Canadians to improve their health, safety and quality of life by providing training and community service. St. John Ambulance is a foundation of The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem - celebrationg 900 years of service in 1999. The work of St. John ambulance is carried out in Canada by two distinct yet mutually dependent groups:
The Brigade: uniformed volunteers who provide community service such as first aid coverage at public events and community health care service.
The Association: a network of medical professionals, program development specialists and instructors who provide health and safety trauining across Canada and internationally. |
| We are over 25,000 volunteers including:
12,500 uniformed brigade volunteers with more than 2,200 youth members and 1,900 Therapy Dog members.
approximately 7,000 nationally-certified instructors.
over 300 permanent staff members across Canada.
a Canadian Order headed by the Governor General as Prior, and the Queen as Sovereign Head. |

Special Centers for first aid training and CPR training within Air Canada, Canada Post, Canadian Airlines International, Canadian National, Candian Pacific, Canadian Space Agency, the Department of Foreign Affairs & International Trade, the Department of National Defence, Eaton's, First Air, the Government of Canada, Northern Telecom, the RCMP and VIA Rail. |

over two million hours of voluntary service each year.
training in Canadian eye surgical programs for doctors at the St. John Ophthalmic Hospital in Jerusalem - specializing in the research and treatment of eye diseases.
funds to endow a bed at the hospital of Jerusalem.
first aid advise to Workers' Compensation Boars and Occupational Health and Safety divisions.
annual nursing bursaries to students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
lifesaving awards to individuals who save or attempt to save a life. |

the national Junior, Cadet and Crusader programs for young people which foster community service.
the SMARTRISK Foundation's HEROES program.

a full rane of safety-orientedTM courses - in English, French, Spanish and other languages - designed for people all all ages and walks of life.
five levels of CPR training which are taught in accordance with the guidelines of the American Heart Association and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
specialized training for people working in industry, high-risk occupations and remote areas as well as coaches and adventure seekers.
health promotion courses designed to help individuals stay healthy and happy.
community service, including assistance in retirement homes and child care centers, bicycle path patrols, food collection and canteen services.
a national Therapy Dog program visiting hospitals and nursing homers.
disaster relief in times of emergency and national disaster. |

In 1999 The Order of St. John will celebrate it's 900th Anniversary - a milestone that few organizations in the world will have the oppertunity to observe. All Canadians will be asked to join in the celebrations and assist us in strenthenuing and building our resources to provide community and youth programs for the new millennium.
