Dear friends,

I have sent the following mail to the Democrat senator, Vicci Bourne. I
would like to ask you all to put pressure on Australian foreign and
shadow foreign ministers to prohibit on using cyanide in mines
globally by the Australian Mining companies in overseas after the next
coming election.

Best wishes,

Dear Senator Bourne,

I have to write this letter to you right after your night time talkback
program on the ABC Radio on 7 November 2001. I was on the telephone
queue, unfourtunately I could not get opportunity to ask you questions
about Australian Mining Companies in Overseas.

I am one of the Turkish Australians who run the campaign against
Normandy Mining supporting Bergama people in Turkey. As you know, we
sent more than 5000 petitions requesting you to present our concerns at
the Federal Parliament more than 7 months ago. We demanded prohibition
on the use of cyanide reagents by Australian Mining companies globally
in mines. Hovewer, we could not hear anything about that so far. Because
you were using excuse you have more important issues every time.

I and my friends spent a lot of time to collect those petitions under
many difficulties hoping that one of trusty senator can do something.
Desperate people in Bergama are still struggling under many pressures
nearly 12 years so far. We have heard three different cyanide disaster,
two in Gana one in China, for only last three weeks time. People in tens
of villages lack of clean drinking water.

At the moment, I have to think twice how I can believe your promises to
vote you.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Good luck for the election,

Emet Degirmenci
