| Hockey and Girls May 14, 2009 by Moe Diggity Truth is, more and more girls are picking up the sport of hockey and it hasn't been considered a "boy's sport" for years. However, up until a few days ago, I'd never played on a team that had a girl on the roster. I've played against a girl before. And people have even said I play like a girl (though that would be an insult to female hockey players everywhere. But on Monday, a new first... Due to playing on a Monday, rather than our usual Wednesday, we were going to have a short bench. Some recruiting was done and two new faces popped in to the dressing room followed by a female voice which was just out of sight behind the concrete wall that graces the entrance of the dressing room. "C'mon in" one of the new guys said, "no one's naked." And she did. In my mind, I was like "HEY! HEY! WTF!! I'm not naked, but I'm only wearing jock shorts and a wife-beater undershirt. And, in my world, that's pretty damn close to being naked!" She didn't seem to have a problem with being in a room of less than fully clothed guys and, despite a few raised eyebrows, the guys didn't seem to mind her being there either. She stayed there pretty close to the opening whistle and I started fantas... er... wondering if she was actually going to get changed in our dressing room, too. As it turns out, she didn't. She got changed pretty quick in another dressing room and made her way out just in time to see my annual polar bear flop as I stepped on to the ice with one skate guard still on my skate. (This time, I vow to never e-e-e-EVER never ever wear skate guards again... EVER! Humiliation in front of a bunch of guys is one thing... but to get humiliated in front of a bunch of guys and one super-stacked chick? Uh uh. Bye bye skate guards.) Yeah, so, anyways, we still lost the game. At no fault of hers, by the way. She was awesome. And even though she was dressed in full hockey gear, I'm sure a few of us were picturing her skating around the ice like the girl in the picture above. |
