gauchada: conceptual form of gaucho, all gauchos. Also to make a gauchada is to help, (as high is the gaucho in Argentine mind). Argentina is curently proud of gauchos, but it not always was in this way. There was a president, Sarmiento, who said the infamous words "gaucho´s blood hasn´t any value even for watering the soil.". It was during his administration that José Hernández started writing his Martín Fierro.

gaucho: traditional country man. The word was traced back to the last years of 18 th century, in colonial days, in the other side of Río de la Plata, current Republic of Uruguay. In those days it had a pejorative meaning and was used to name men who lived alone in the country side. In the independence war, Montevideo, under Spanish control, was besieged by independent troops which enroled many gauchos, so Spanish soldiers spoke about those damn gauchos. One of the besiegers was Martín Miguel de Güemes who some years later would be the defender of the northwestern border against Spain in his province of Salta with the so called Güemes´ Gauchos.
