Conan O'Brian
10.12.99
Ok, not really.
fine. NYC trip #1
happy now?
geez.

Picture, if you will, being a resident advisor. The responsibility of 29 freshman women is on your shoulders. While trying to get to konw them and help them, you want them to know you. People can always bond through music, right? Well, it took a bit of convincing after mentioning Moxy Fruvous.

So, we're dragging ourselves thorugh the hell that is known as mid-terms. Everyone's in my room as usual while I am getting ready for class. I don't remember the exact order of events, but it went something like this: I was looking at Fruvous's tour schedule and commenting on how much it sucks that the next show I'll be going to wasn't until the middle of November. Jes or Laura or Natalie or Atasi planted the idea in my head that a group fo us could go see the Conan O'Brian show the next day...Moxy Fruvous had an appearance scheduled for 10.12.99. Well, after about 15 minutes of discussing this, I had to get to class so I left the girls [1] behind to take care of figuring everything out.

When I came home, things were taking form. We decided to leave at 3am so we could be in NYC by 10am...the time that Conan O'Brian tickets were given out. I still had a take-home midterm to write, so I tried to force myself to complete it. Things weren't going so well. After a while, a good-sized crowd had formed in my room editing my essays and hleping me to formulate my ideas. Several hours later, I was half way through with my midterm and the time for our departure was closing in upon us. I decided to give up the battle and turn in my midterm halfway completed...and finish the other half sometime that week.

We were on the road by 3:30am...the four passengers were Atasi, Jes, Kelly, and Danielle. To me the trip took forever with a lot of gas stops and waiting to use the restroom in the bitter cold. We made it to NYC, though, and were excited to be sitting in traffic. Oh, joy. We were outside the Lincoln Tunnelinching our way closer tothe city. At last we made it through the tunnely, only to discover we were in the wrong lane. The only way to correct this mistake was to go back through the tunnel again. So, with Kelly at the wheel [2], we turned around and with a few traffic violations, we were once again entering the city...except there was this black SUV following us kinda closely. We were scared because Kelly had cut in front of him and so I thought he was going to kill us or something (hey...you never know these days with road rage and all).

We got through the tunnel...and got lost. We always seem to get lost in NYC. Well, the black SUV pulls up next to us and this guy in a black suit and black sunglass ("Here come the Men in Black") rolled odwn his window. Turns out he was a secret service agent and gave us directions. Such a nice guy. And we thought we were going to get shot. Hahaha.

After a bit of city drivine...and my freaking out...we pulled into a parking deck and were out walking the streets. The mixture of our group was quite interesting. Jes is from Connecticutt and visits NYC quite often. Kelly lives outside of DC and Atasi is from Atlanta. They're all used to big cities. I have visited cities before (my family being from Philadelphia), but still get amazed by them. Then there's Danielle. She's great. She's been in cities as well, but she was such a trip. Danielle has this thikn southern accent and she was really emphasizing it while talking about all the tall buildings. Jes was mortified cause everyone was looking at us like we were tourists. Tee hee. I was laughing so hard. It was funny.

By the time we got to the NBC studios, all th tickets for the show were gone. How upset was I! The people at NBC said to return at 4pm to see if we could still get in. So, we spent the day running around the city. It was so much fun. We walked up and down 5th Avenue going in and out of stores. FAO Schwartz was the best. WE all kept getting separated then finding each other. Atasi, Jes, and I played dress up. :-) When it was time to leave, Barbie came out to sign autographs. How exciting! She was all done up in her princess outfit. Her comment to us: "I wish I was wearing jeans." Only in NYC would Barbie say that to a bunch of college students....you wouldn't catch Mickey leaning over to anyone to say he wanted to be in shorts and a t-shit, now would you?

Back at NBC, we couldn't get over the line of people waiting to get into Conana. We talked with this one guy and he told us to wait an hour and he would let us know if we could get in. So, we waited and waited. In the end, we couldn't get in. [3] I was so disheartened. The girls tried to cheer me up but it was no use. They hadn't seen Fruvous perform, so they couldn't understand. So, we left. The way we calculated the amount of time to make it back to the 'burg, we would get there just in time to catch the show on tv. Off we went to get the car and jet home.

One pit stop was made at this guy's house (ok, so his name is Gabe) to pick up some winter clothes for him. It was fun.

We pulled into the parking lot outside our dorm and ran inside. After a bit of running around trying to find everyone, we ended up in Bowdler's room telling stories and awaiting Fruvous's appearance. Well, it wasn't the same seeing them on television, but it was great to watch it.

[1] they're not girls, they're women...but me being me, I call them girls.
[2] i have a serious problem with driving in the city. i just don't like to do it, although i am getting better with having to drive through NYC (since i had to do it one time because i was driving by myself). and, we've decided that i'm better in the back seat of the car facing out the side window while someone else is driving my car since i freak out so much with every move that is made....
[3] turns out that Jordan had an extra ticket to the show...but we didn't know her then and i really wish that i had.
