The First Fae Child
continued...
(part 4)
Soon, the two were in each other's arms.  Then Dex looked into Marigold's eyes, a seriousness about him that she had never seen before.

"Marigold, I love you, " Dex whispered in her ears.

"Love me?" She stepped back, confused.

"Yes. That's the word that describes all of the feelings I have for you.  They go deep and they are true.  From the moment  that I saw you,  I wanted no other women but you."

Then Dex, bent down on one knee as he reached for Marigold's hands to hold in his.

"Marigold, I want to be with you until the end, to take care of you, never leaving your side. Without you, life has no meaning.  I simply must be with you.  Do you agree to be betrothing to me and no one else?   Do you agree to go through this life and the next as my mate?"

Marigold was overwhelmed!  She completely forgot about Crystal.  She completely forgot about Crystal's command to Dex to stay away.  She completely forgot about Crystal's  threats to all of the Fae if they continued to neglect their duties.  She thought of nothing, but how much she loved Dex.

"Yes, yes, yes!"  Shy little Marigold Had NO
problems accepting THIS invitation.  She wanted to be with Dex because he truly made her happy, and she wanted all of Gaia to know!

But they had to keep their love a secret.  As the next few weeks went by, only their closest confidants knew of Marigolds and Dex's relationship.   The Orange Fae helped cover for Marigold so that she could spend time with Dex, and the male Fae helped cover for Dex so that he could be with Marigold. They could always count on being together after the late meal, and Dex and Marigold even began to sleep in the forest in order to be together.  They always made sure that they were back in the camp early so that it appeared that each had slept in their own nest all night.

But, really they didn't have to worry that much about Crystal.  You see, this was the time when Crystal found out that Jazz and his family was living quite comfortably  despite how hard she worked for the opposite.  She wanted them to be dependent on her, living in darkness at night and struggling with a non-yielding section of Gaia during the day.

Crystal had become so angry when she saw all of the improvements that the NeoFae had made to their camp that she flew clear to the tiptop center of Gaia where she stayed to calm down.  And it took a few weeks for her to calm down, despite how cold it was.  On her little "vacation" Crystal created and destroyed, and created and destroyed, over and over, until she was too bushed to continue.  Then she fell asleep for a few more weeks.

I guess all of that creating and destroying can really be exhausting.

Of course, the Fae didn't know what had happened to Crystal, but they also knew that she could appear at any moment.  So, not wanting to endure her wrath, they all went about their duties as if she was there.  This, of course, meant working double shifts for the few that knew in order for Marigold and Dex to have some time alone  be together.
Dex and Marigold slept in the forest  so that they could be together.

It wasn't very long until Marigold found that she was with child.  Dex was overjoyed, but he feared for his mate and their child.  How long could THIS be kept a secret? So, Marigold found a place that would perfect for them to raise their child in peace and privacy.  It was low against a mountain with a rocky overhang, surrounded by plenty of tall thick trees, a stream of clear water running through it.

Their new home  was close enough for Marigold and her Orange sisters to make it there within  a few minutes. Yet, far enough away and too rocky to be of any interest to the others, and hidden from the main trails that had been created around the Fae camp over the years.  It was surely a place where they could live unnoticed.

Being a Fae, the child grew rapidly inside of Marigold, and it soon became difficult for her to fly far.  So, Tangerine and Apricot shared the responsiblity of flying Dex back and forth to camp, and covering for Marigold at the Shrine. Yet, Crystal didn't notice anything unusual  because she had not returned.

In the meantime, Marigold began to instinctively prepare for the upcoming birth.  She didn't possess any magic, so everything she did had to be done by hand.  But, Apricot and Tangerine were able to talk a couple of the sisters who were Becoming into making some things for the baby without causing suspicion.

"I do so envy your powers, " Tangerine would always begin.

"Oh, but you couldn't possibly make..." Apricot would always end, describing something that Marigold had shared  she would like to have.  And the Fae who was Becoming simply couldn't resist showing off in front of her sisters who didn't have the special gift. In the end, Marigold had quite a nice selection of baby things for the nursery.

When the baby was born, Marigold was sad that she could not share her joy with all of her sisters.  But, Dex proudly boasted to the other males about his beautiful daughter that they named Blossom.
Marigold and Dex were constanly looking over their shoulders, worried that they would be discovered.
Dex found Marigold the next afternoon at the Shrine.
Dex tickles Marigold to let her know she is a desirable mother-to-be.
On the night of the first birth of a Fae child, Dan, Dante, Dillon, Dirk and Dorn joined Dex around a fire as he passed a sweet herb wrapped in a thin leaf to each of his friends.  They lit one end with the fire, inhaling the other, the smoke filling the air.  They laughed together for the first time in weeks, congratulating Dex on his good fortune, the white wisp of smoke curling over their heads and disappearing into the night's sky.  The herb gone, the men began to speak of the women, comparing each beauty against the other.  Dex, however, reminded them that his mate and his daughter were the most beautiful creatures on Gaia, and quite enough to satisfy him.
However, it didn't take Dex's mind off of Marigold.  By the next afternoon, he had found Marigold alone at the shrine sitting by the fire preparing to burn some dried scented leaves.

"Please, come with me to our special place, " he begged. "I miss you."

       "I can't," Marigold replied. "I..."

"Oh, you really don't care for me." He sighed.  "I thought Crystal was wrong, but I guess she was right." He turned to walk away with droopy shoulders, his head bent towards the ground.

Seeing Dex so sad and dejected just tore at Marigold's heart.

"No, stop. Wait Dex! I want to see you, but we must be careful."  She looked around, then cocked her head to one side as she tried to feel Crystal's presence.

"She's not here, but she will know if someone is not tending the shrine. Apricot will not mind taking my place for a while. Go now, and wait for me, " she instructed Dex.
