Barbarossa
Battle for Moscow
|
The Eastern Front was the largest military campaign in the history of the world. Fought for four years between the Nazi armies of Germany, and the Communist armies of the Soviet Union, nearly 35 million soldiers were involved along a 3000 mile front.
The campaign was one of extremes. The soldiers fought in sub-zero weather that froze rifle bolts to exhausting summer heat. Divisions fought and died to the last man, while entire armies retreated in panic. Cavalry units sometimes charged recklessly against steel-plated tanks and poorly trained conscripts fought against crack units of disciplined stormtroopers.
But in this author's opinion, the fighting on the Eastern Front can be seen to begin nearly two years before the German invasion of the Soviet Union: the invasion of Poland. Hence, this site will endeavour to cover all aspects of the war on the Eastern Front, from the invasion of Poland in September 1939, to the taking of the Reichstag in 1945 by a Russian Sergeant.
