National Illustrators Conference
Sante Fe, New Mexico, Oct. 24, 1999

The first ever illustration conference is shaping up nicely and promises to be an event that YOU SHOULD NOT MISS. It will be held on October 24-26, 1999 at the El Dorado Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The program will consist of presentations and panel discussions, plus breakout sessions for those interested in more in-depth discussion on particular topics such as contracts and negotiations.

At this point, the speakers include renowned national illustrators Brad Holland, Gary Baseman, Marshall Arisman, Dugald Stermer, Jack Unruh, Cathie Bleck and others plus artist’s reps, lawyers, legislators and educators.

The major sponsors are Communication Arts, American Showcase, Adobe, Alternative Pick, Apple, Art Works, Black Book, Georgia-Pacific, Graphic Artists Guild, How, Mitchell Color Cards, Modern Postcard, Murphy Design, Picturbook, Print, Serbin Communications, The Society of Illustrators, Step-by-Step, Trojan Litho, The Workbook and WY East. As you can see there are some big names getting involved in this conference.

Why should you attend?
Finally, there will be a forum for illustrators—just illustrators—who have always been included as a part of graphic design conferences. Never before have we had the opportunity to come together on a national level to discuss and share problems and provide solutions for our rapidly evolving business.

Over the years we have let business control our destiny. The laws of supply and demand have seen our business shrink. Large corporations and lawyers have been rapidly trying to take control of our intellectual property and our ability to protect our copyrighted art. The rules have been laid down for us and we have had no alternative but to follow them because our business has never worked together to present a solid front.

So if you want to find out what the business of illustration holds in store and are interested in playing a part in your own destiny, I urge you to come to this conference. You will be seeing ads in graphic publications and will probably be receiving a brochure promoting the event shortly.

Conference registration is $400 and there is a large block of rooms at the El Dorado Hotel at $129 per night. To request a registration form, please call 1-800-799-6368 or e-mail [email protected]. For hotel reservations phone the Eldorado Hotel at 1-800-955-4455. For other travel arrangements call Keith Keller at K&K Travel 1-800-326-5099. Be sure to mention the Illustration Conference to receive our special conference rate on hotel and airfare reservations.

Hope to see you there. —Michael Steirnagle
