Purpose: The principle behind the Society of Illustrators is strength in numbers. The formation of a group of professionals creates potential to promote awareness and abilities, to create programs and activities for educational growth and to provide interaction for people who share similar experiences and interests.
Programs: Each
year, SISD provides a forum for guest speakers. Several
guest illustrators are invited to show their work, talk about
their experiences as a professional illustrator, and give a demonstration
of their style and technique.
In the past, SISDhas hosted artists such as Gary Kelly,
Drew Struzan, Thomas Blackshear and C.F. Payne. Local artists
have also been featured such as Jennifer Hewitson and Bob Watts.
In 1992, we began a tradition of inviting a non-illustrator to
address topics concerning the business side of illustration.
For instance, Barbara Gordon, artist's rep and author on freelancing,
discussed how to set up selling a portfolio. Future ideas include
portfolio presentations and reviews, pricing sessions, panel
discussions with illustration buyers and exploring future illustration
trends.
Activities: SISD has developed several programs for education and edification. Life drawing classes are offered in Spring and Fall. A student outreach program has been created to provide students with career information on freelance illustration. Periodically, SISD publishes promotional materials promoting participating members. This is sent to over 1,000 art buyers to raise the profile of the organization and to solicit attention to our membership. Further inquiry allows any interested person or agency to review our membership portfolio. Job referrals by SISD are free.

with news and information pertinent to San Diego Illustrators.
