A Message from the President:

Dear SISD Members,

There are some changes at SISD. Special thankyou and goodbye to Co-president, John Webster and Secretary Carol Cottone. John has been a hard worker, designer of our event flyers and friend. John we wish you well and are glad you will still be involved in SISD. Carol, also hard working, wears more hats than most. We wish you luck Carol and look forward to your next “Nuts & Bolts” meeting.

A big welcome to new board members! As Co-vice president with Ken Jourdrey is past SISD President, teacher, illustrator and nice guy– Michael Steirnagle. His fresh ideas and outlook are a welcome addition. Paul Walker, a hard working intermediate member, has taken on the largely thankless but very important job as Treasurer.

Last but not least, out former Treasurer, Patricia Battaglia, is SISD’s new Secretary. Pattie, who put together the SISD web page, will now be the one sending you general meeting notices; inviting your input in planning our future. Thanks to all of you for being involved. See you at the next meeting.

National Illustrators Conference
Sante Fe, New Mexico, Oct. 24, 1999

The long awaited illustrators conference in Santa Fe in the Fall of this year is well on the way. It promises to be the first gathering of illustrators on a national level to converge on Sante Fe to discuss and “air out” all of the concerns and problems of our rapidly changing profession.

As all of you know, our profession has undergone some major changes in the last ten years and it seems more and more that we have sat back and let business, technology, and the law of supply and demand shape the future of illustration.
We have allowed ourselves to be diminished to the level of suppliers who are dispensable or replaceable as the business community sees fit.

Back in the 1930’s, a good illustrator could expect to buy a home on the fee paid for a full page advertisement. Today, we’d be lucky to pay the taxes on that property. There are many reasons for this and some of this we have no control over. However, there are some things as a group we should be addressing in order to protect an honorable profession for future generations.

That is why this conference is absolutely necessary to ensure our survival in a world being swallowed up by machines and “the bottom line”. For more information about this important conference, call 317-253-3141 and SISD will keep you updated throughout the year. Website: http://www.illustconf.org/
