Memorial

Recognizes the courage and personal strengths it takes for a woman to leave a volatile and abusive relationship. To those women that have fled to safety, we applaud you and wish you a safe future with happiness, good health and much laughter.

For those women who have chosen to remain in relationships for various reasons we support your decision and acknowledge your bravery. You will know when it is no longer safe to remain.

With greatest sorrow we are paying tribute through this memorial site to the hundreds of women and children who have lost their lives in the name of domestic violence and other forms of violence. Our sincere condolences are extended to their children, family and friends.

Let the following names serve as a catalyst not just as a remembrance, but for a commitment that will end violence against women and children globally.

Family violence does not discriminate against age, social status, economic standing, education or culture. It can and does affect all women from every walk of life.

Ottawa, ON. - October 14th, 1999
Aysar ABBAS, 30 years old: who was stabbed 23 times in the neck and once to the heart by her spouse Adi Abdel Humaid. The media reported that her husband argued to the Supreme Court of Canada, that he had the right to take her life under Muslim Law.  The Courts did not support his argument and his conviction for murder with no parole for 25 years was upheld in 2006.

Ottawa, ON. - May 11, 2004
Sonia ABBAS, 30 years old: was strangled by her estranged spouse Mike Sterling who later committed suicide. M.S.

Fergus, ON. - October, 1996
Patricia ABBOTT, 40 years old, mother of 1 child: was shot by her estranged spouse Gordon Abbott.He was charged with 1st degree murder.

Toronto, ON. - April, 2000
Halina ABRAHAM, 30 years old: was shot by her estranged boyfriend who was on parole at the time for a previous assault on Halina. Mr. Williams then took his own life. M.S

Toronto, ON. - March 28, 2007
Rispah ADALA, 32: died from police called ‘obvious signs of trauma’  her husband Julios Otukol 34 has been charged with 2nd degree murder. The media reported that Rispah was a vibrant member of the Kenya community in Toronto.

Sudbury, ON. – May, 2005
Delphine ADAMSON, 62 years: was killed by her husband Mike Adamson using blunt force trauma. The body was found decomposed in a shallow grave by campers and was identified through dental records. Mike Adamson was charged with 1st degree murder.

Toronto, ON. - Sept 19th, 2000
Cindy ALARCO, 33 years old, mother of 1: was beaten to death by K. Jefferson her estranged boyfriend. There was a history of violence in the relationship and he was charged with murder.

Ottawa, ON. - January, 2002
Wadha  ALBUDRI, 29 years old, mother of 3: was stabbed by her estranged spouse in front of their 19 month old child. A neighbour was watching her two other children and called the police when there was no answer at her door and the baby was crying. Hussain Hassan Abdullah was charged with 1st degree murder. 

Toronto, ON. - August, 1996
Bibi Hajra ALLI, 37 years old, mother of 2: was killed by blunt force trauma by her estranged spouse M. Rafeek. Divorce papers had been served on her husband and neighbours said they were a ‘nice, calm family’ Charge: 2nd degree murder.

Mississauga, ON. – June, 1995
Victoria ALTY: was beaten to death by her husband Harold.  Charge: 2nd degree murder.

Toronto ON. - July 23 1990
Comfort  AMANKWAAH: was stabbed to death by her estranged spouse who then he took his own life. M.S.

Nuzhat  AMIJI, 23: was a victim of an honour killing committed by  Adamjee Mahaboobhoy who also wounded her brother. He was convicted of 2nd degree murder with no parole for 15 years.

Richmond Hill, ON. - April 1997
Kerry ANDERSON, 33:  As it was first believed to be a suicide her husband R. Anderson was not arrested for 2 years post homicide and charged with 2nd degree murder.

Dimitria ANMGELOPOULOS, 23: was killed by her boyfriend along with her aunt.  Mohamed Motar was arrested and charged.

Toronto, ON. - February 28, 2001
Hasan (Fatima) ANWAR, 25, mother of 2: was stabbed 30 times by her husband Najib Anwar. He was charged with murder

Pamela Okee APOKO, mid-thirties, mother of 4: was stabbed to death by her estranged husband. Children in care of Children's Aid Society. Spouse in hospital from a gun shot wound by police at the time of intervention. Spouse charged with murder. Trial pending.

Yasmin  ASHAREH, 20: was stabbed and dismembered by her boyfriend  William Imona –Russell who was charged with 1st degree murder.
Footnote: William Imona –Russell is before the courts (Jan.09) for the rape of a previous girlfriend who he allegedly infected with HIV.  He has not gone to trial for the death of Yasmin as of this date of posting (12/01/09) BME

Brampton, ON. - January 22, 2007
Nabila ASIFA, 36, mother of 4: was killed by her spouse Shafqat Nagra who turned himself into police. It was reported that the relationship had a history of abuse.

Toronto, ON. -  January 20, 2007
Elva ASHTON, 36, mother of 2, a health care provider: was stabbed to death by her boyfriend George McLeary. Mr. McLeary hours later stepped into the path of an oncoming train near Colbourg, Ontario. Friends say the relationship was only about 1 month old and further stated the accused was a nice man. Her family said otherwise and that Elva was acting stressed days before her death. – M.S.

Toronto, ON. - June 26, 2006
Seena BADHAN, 19 years old: was thrown from her balcony by her estranged spouse Zohaib Shaukat. He was charged with 1st degree murder.
COURT/TRIAL UPDATE:  Justice Ian Nordheimer accepted both the Crown and Defenses joint submission that Zolaib Skaukat be sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility for parole for 12 years. The accused plead guilty to 2nd degree murder on March 26, 2008.

Scarborough, ON. - March 11, 1990
Elizabeth BAIN, 21: went missing in March, 1990. Although her body has yet to be recovered her boyfriend Robert Baltovich was charged and found guilty of her death. He always professed his innocence and won a court appeal of the charges. He was later cleared of the charges as the Crown conceded there was insufficient evidence to proceed to trial based on changes in the law. The defense alleged that Elizabeth knew Paul Bernardo. Mr. Baltovich was represented by a firm of lawyers who represents the wrongful convicted.

Perth, ON. - January 1996 –
Donna BARR, 43, mother of 3: was killed by her estranged husband Kenneth Barr who then committed suicide. M.S.

Donna BARTMAN, 39, mother of 3: was shot by her estranged spouse N. Bartman who then committed suicide. – M.S.

Ottawa, ON. – June 01, 2008
Alicia BATEMAN, 28, and Ryan Sawchuk were high school sweethearts who had planned to marry. According to Sawchuk’s family the couple were planning a September wedding, but Alicia was planning to break of the relationship. A statement by his family in Calgary told the Ottawa Sun that he couldn’t live without her. Police found Alicia strangled in her Jeep Cherokee, bound to the seat by her neck. In the home they found Ryan hanging dead in the garage with a makeshift noose around his neck. It is reported Sawchuk left Calgary the day before the homicide.

Vineland, ON. - March, 2007
Stephine BECK 29. The Ontario Court of Appeal will hear on Jan. 22.09) the Crowns argument against a man’s sentence of one day in jail plus time served for strangling Stephine Beck March 04, 2007. Wayne Rycak (55) pleaded guilty May14th, 2008 to manslaughter in the strangulation of Stephine Beck. Her body was found partially naked beside a road in Vineland, Ontario (March 04, 2007). Judge Stephen Glithero sentenced Ryscak to one day in jail, giving him credit of 30 months for the 14 months he spent in pre-trial custody. 
TRIAL UPDATE:  The Ontario Court of Appeal will hear the Crowns argument against the one day sentence on January 22, 2009. (Toronto Sun. Oct. 21, 2008)

Sarasotta, Florida, USA - July 11, 1997
Sheila BELLUSH, 35, mother of 6:was murdered by her ex-husband a San Antonio multi-millionaire who put a contract on her life after she had remarried, moved from Texas to Florida and given birth to quadruplets. The hired killer(s) savagely slashed Sheila, slit her throat and shot her in the face. Sheila was at home alone with her 4 small babies, the murderers' leaving them to wander through her blood. Her daughter discovered her remains when she returned home from school. Sheila feared for her life even after remarrying and relocating. Her ex-spouse Allen Blackthorne was obsessed with revenge based on the fact Sheila defeated him in family court and had custody of their two daughters. Sheila asked her sister that if anything ever happened to her, that she make contact with author Ann Rule to write a story about her case. The book Every Breath You Take is the fulfillment of her request. Blackthorne and his two accomplices have been charged and convicted. Allen Van Houte Blackthorne rec’d two life sentences.

Nassimima  BENKARTOUSSA 37, & Sabrina Benkartoussa 34, mother of 1: were stabbed by the spouse of Sabrina who then committed suicide. There was a no contact order in place between Sabrina and her estranged spouse.  M.S.

Julie BERNER, 29, mother of 2: was beaten to death by her boyfriend whose identity has not been released. He has been charged with 1st degree murder.

Anne BIOMME, 37: was stabbed to death by her estranged spouse. The accused was shot by police.

Oakville, ON. - June 09, 1980
Deborah BLEUGE (24) was estranged from her boyfriend David Chapman.
UPDATE: David Chapman was convicted in 2006 with 2nd degree murder. He died in prison at the age of 59. (Toronto Star- June 16, 2008)

Toronto, ON. - Nov. 2002
Gail Bonita BLUNT, 39, mother of 2: was stabbed to death by her estranged spouse Brian Blunt. The victim’s throat was slashed when she met her husband to discuss child custody issues. The accused attempted to O.D. but was taken to hospital and was charged with 1st degree murder.

Toronto, ON. - Dec. 01, 2003
Natalie  BOBEIKA, 46, mother of 1: was stabbed to death by her estranged spouse Iouri Bokeika. Charged with 2nd degree murder and plead guilty 21/2/06.  He was sentenced to life without parole for 14 years,

Mississauga, ON. - August 1998
Elizabeth BODNAR, 61: suffered blunt force trauma that resulted in her death. The accused is her spouse S. Ortan who was charged with 2nd degree murder.

London, ON. - Nov. 2003
Vanessa BOL, 17, mother of 1: was shot by her estranged boyfriend E. Dominiques who was charged with 1st degree murder. Neighbours heard the woman crying ‘my baby’. Her parents are now suing the police for not charging and arresting the accused for a previous assault. 

Mississauga, ON. - June, 2000
Harjapp (Jay) BOLLA, 29: was stabbed to death by her estranged boyfriend Babiur Singh. The accused set his van afire with himself and the victim inside. Police ruled a murder-suicide. M.S

Mississauga, ON. - Dec. 12, 2003
Zofia BONDER, 45, mother of 3: was stabbed to death by her spouse Maciej Bonder. Zofia was killed while her children slept. One of her daughters discovered the body and called 911. Charged and convicted of 2nd degree murder, the accused cannot seek parole for 10 years.

Toronto, ON. - January 26, 2006
Rose BOROJA, 54: was strangled by her spouse Pero Bonoja. He was charged with 2nd degree murder.

Bridgewater, N.S. - January, 2008
Karissa Boudrea , 12: was strangled by her mother Penny. She pleaded guilty to 2nd degree murder with no chance of parole for 20 years on January 30th, 2009.  Media reports that the common-law spouse of Penny told her to make a choice between him or her daughter. (Toronto Star. 31/1/09)

Hamilton, ON. - June, 2003
Alise (Phillips) BROWN, 20, mother of 1: was shot by her un-named estranged boyfriend who followed up with the threat after being released from jail for a previous offense against the victim.  Conflicting reports indicate: (a) the man was charged with murder (b) he turned the gun on himself. M.S.

Toronto, ON. - December 25, 2002
Carmela BRUNI, 39, mother of 1: was bludgeoned to death by her husband Emillio Bruni on Christmas Day.  After attacking his wife, he called 911 to report his wife suffered a head injury. Carmela later died in hospital. Emillio was charged with 2nd degree murder and sentenced to 70 months incarceration.

Hamilton, ON. - Aug, 1995
Alayne BRYK, 26: was shot by her estranged spouse who then committed suicide.  Friends reported that they thought they were reconciling. M.S.

Mississauga, ON. - 2001
Yvette BUDRAM, 41, mother of 2: was bludgeoned to death by her spouse Moh Rankisson. The decomposed body was located on a road near Hamiton 2 years after the homicide. Forensics’ identified the body and the story aired on W-5, (CTV). The spouse was charged and convicted May 05, 2006. Their two children were adopted by family friends.

Wendy BURELL: was stabbed to death by her estranged spouse before he took his own life. M.S.

Melody BURTIS, 40, mother of 2 and her son Harley Burtis aged 8: were slashed to death by Albert Quiment who was referred to as Melody’s new boyfriend. He has been charged with 2 counts of murder and two counts of kidnapping.

Bond Head, ON. - May, 1999
Heather BURTON, 43: was shot by her spouse Bill Burton who then took his own life. M.S.

Carol BUTLER, 45: was shot by her estranged common-law spouse James Logan who then committed suicide.  The gun was returned to the accused by police after a gun related domestic charge was withdrawn.  There was a history of violence and the man threatened to kill the victim after a previous break-up. Sarnia, ON. - January, 1998
Fenny CAMPBELL, 44: died from blunt force trauma. Her spouse was charged with murder.

Bramalea, ON. - Dec. 11, 2004
Aysegui CANDIR, 47: was shot by her estranged husband Bebun Candir. Media reports that Aysegue was waiting / or waited until her spouse left the country on business before she felt safe to leave him.

Toronto, ON. - November, 2003
Francia CARDENAS,  32: died from blunt force trauma. At latest revision there was still an outstanding warrant for her estranged common-law spouse Yanga (Barri) Wanji.  Update: The remains of Farina Cardenas were finally located after almost four years of her going missing in November, 2003. The remains were found by a hunter in overgrown bush near Bracebridge.  A warrant is still outstanding for her husband. (City News- December 05, 2007)

Thunder Bay, ON. - Oct, 1999
Dori-Lynn CAROLL, 30, mother of 2: was strangled by her estranged spouse Brian Caroll who then committed suicide. Their children were asleep in their rooms when the bodies were discovered.  M.S.

Norma Cervas: was strangled by her estranged spouse who then took his own life. M.S

Markham, ON. - August 02, 2005
Caroline CHAN-LEE, 72: was strangled by her spouse Yui Wah (Jos) Chan.  She died from a fractured larynx. Mr. Chan was charged with 2nd degree murder approximately 8 months after the homicide date noted above.

Tuyet CHAU was stabbed by her estranged spouse who hung himself while in police custody. M.S.

Michele CHIESA 34: was strangled by her boyfriend Michael Shott. Her body was located in a freezer at her workplace. Mr. Shott was charged with 1st degree murder.

Brenda CHILLINGWORTH, 38, mother of 2: was shot by her husband who then committed suicide.  M.S.

Toronto, ON. - October 10, 1992
Hau (Cathy) CHIN, 20+ was beaten to death by her estranged boyfriend. He was charged and convicted to serve 7 years. Ms. Chin was a caseworker with the City of Toronto, Social Services Division.

Toronto/Richmond Hill, ON. -  Nov. 1, 2005
Hee Jeung CHOI, 33: was strangled by her spouse Young Huan Lee. 
TRIAL / COURT UPDATE:  Young Huan Lee was convicted of 2nd degree murder and was sentenced on August 22, 2008 to life imprisonment with no chance of parole for 11 years for the death of his estranged ex-wife. (Toronto Star-August 12, 2008)

Toronto, ON. - July 17, 2005
Hafiza CHOWDBURY, 41 mother of 2: died from blunt force trauma. Her husband Rafat Chowdbury has been charged and their 2 children were placed with CAS. UPDATE: Rafat Chowdbury was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 years at trial in November 2007. (Toronto Star- December 22, 2007)

Orangeville, ON. - April, 1997
Nevenka CINDRIC, 44, Josip Cindric, 17, Kristina Cindric 12: were shot by the estranged husband and father Janko Cindric who then took his own life. M’s + S. 

Chatham, ON. - June 29, 2004
Donovan  CLUBB, 22 months : was killed by Shawn Palmer who was the boyfriend of his mother and in the process of separating from him. He was not the father of the child. He has been convicted and must serve 10 years + 3 years for committing an indignity to a body. 

Beaton, ON. - Jan. 06, 1996
Eileen Joy COFFEE, 50: Her body was found decomposed. M. Edelembros, the alleged boyfriend has been charged for the homicide.

Toronto, ON. - January 05, 1992
Maxine COHEN: was found stabbed. Her husband was charged and convicted to serve 12 years.

Toronto, ON. - August, 2004
Fernanda CONCEICAO, 51 and mother of three: died from blunt force trauma. Her husband Manuel Santos, Dos was charged. They were described by neighbours as ‘a happy woman and a nice guy’.

Welland, ON. - January, 2006
Rosalinda CONCEPCION, 32, mother of 3: was strangled by her common-law spouse Leonard James Kelly. He has been charged with 1st degree murder.

Toronto, ON. - July 31, 1999
Luzmila  CONTRERAS, 36 mother of 3: died from blunt force trauma. Her common-law spouse Jason Colson has been charged.

Bowmanville, ON. - Aug 03, 1998
Jennifer COPITHORN, 24 mother of 3: was stabbed to death outside her workplace by her estranged boyfriend Robert Appleton He was charged with her murder.

Toronto, ON. - Aug. 01, 2005
Audrey COTE, 21: died from blunt force trauma. Her boyfriend Ryan Buchnor was charged with 2nd degree murder.
Trial / Court Update:  Bryan Buchnor 28 was charged and convicted of manslaughter in the death of Audrey Cote.  (Toronto St. May 08/08)  Bucknor was sentenced to 10 years on July 31, 2008. Justice John Sproat reduced his time behind bars by 68 months because of time already spend locked up pre-trial.  

Woodstock, ON. - May, 2001
Shelley COWELL, 38: died in her home from multiple stab wounds. Her spouse Christopher Cowell left the scene and was later apprehended and charged with her murder.

Markham, ON. - February 12, 2007.
Julie CROCKER, 33, mother of 2: was stabbed and had her throat slit. The accused is Christopher Little the estranged husband of Julia was body was discovered in her bed.   Little has been charged with two counts of murder as the body of Paula Menendez 34, was found at the home hanging from the garage rafters with her wrists and ankles bound. It is reported she died from strangulation and it has yet to be identified of how she arrived at the location. E.g. kidnapped by Little. Reports indicate that the couples were known to each other, but police have not disclosed further information pre-trial.   The estranged husband of Paula was Toronto sports newscaster Rick Ralph who was on the east coast at his fathers funeral at the time of the double homicide. It is acknowledged that Ralph was dating Crocker at the time of the women’s deaths.

Grimsby, ON. - Jun 14, 2002 – M’s + S
Shannon CRUISE 23, her daughter Shanya Cruise 6, her mother Mary Cruise 53 and her father Donny Cruise 57: were all shot by Peter Kiss,  the estranged boyfriend of Shannon. Shannon had left Peter in the U.S.A and returned to Canada for safety reasons. Mr. Kiss was able to cross the U.S. border with the weapon.  After committing the homicides he then took his own life.

Oshawa, ON. - August 2004
Janice  CUDJOE, 48 mother of 2: was stabbed to death by her husband Randy Cudjoe.  Janice was packing to leave the volatile relationship when she was killed. A friend who was helping her pack her personal effects was also stabbed but survived her injuries. Mr. Cudjoe was charged with 2nd degree murder.

Wakefield, ON. - October 1998
Michelina CUERRIER, 25: died from having her throat slashed by her estranged boyfriend. She was attacked on the way to work. The unidentified boyfriend was charged with murder.

Ottawa, ON. - December 05, 2005
K’Leigh CUNDALL, 21:  a student from Barrie, Ontario was stabbed to death by her estranged boyfriend Tony Roach. He was charged with 1st degree murder.

Toronto/Scarborough, ON. - April, 1998       
Aimee CUNNINGHAM, 33, mother of 1: was slashed to death by her spouse Paul Cunningham who then killed himself by jumping off the Bloor Viaduct in Toronto. M.S.

Alexis CURRIE, 2 years of age: was left to bleed to death alone from a slashed throat. Her father left the scene with his other daughter who was not harmed. Peter Currie killed his child at the first access visit approved by the courts. Peter Currie successfully fought his estranged wife for unsupervised child access. He was charged with his daughter’s murder. There was no inquest into her death. 

Landsdowne, ON. - August, 2005
Donna CURRIE – BURNS, 32, mother of 3:  died from undisclosed injuries. Her estranged common-law spouse Chris Parmar was charged with 2nd degree murder.

Maria CZIBULKA: was beaten to death by her husband, who was charged with 1st degree murder.

Hamilton, ON. - September, 2001
Fiona DARIO, 32, mother of 2: was killed by an insulin overdose by her husband Dr. Christopher Dario. The doctor placed a 911 call to say his spouse had collapsed in the home. She was pronounced at the hospital. The post mortem indicated an overdose of insulin and identified that the victim was not a diabetic. Police approached the spouse with their suspicions and later found him dead from a overdose of poison. 

London, ON. – May 29th, 2006
Stephanie Daubs, aged 12, and Ashley Daubes, aged 15: were killed by their estranged father (John Daubs) who deliberately caused a motor vehicle accident that took his own life along with his daughters. M.S.

Mississauga, ON. - January 08, 2001
Victoria DAVID, aged 52, mother of 3: was strangled by her husband Emmanuel David. He then took his own life. Reports indicate there was a history of violence in the relationship. M.S.

First Nations, ON. - November, 2005
Maryann Davis, 25, mother of 2: was shot by her estranged common-law spouse Brent Kells. The murder took place while Kells was on bail and two days prior to him having to appear in court to respond to charges of assault against Maryann.

Burris, ON. – November, 2000
Dianna Margaret DAW, 23: was shot by her boyfriend Michael Tutu. Police arrested the accused at the scene and charged him with 2nd degree murder.

Akwessasne, Mohawk Territory, ON. - July, 2007
Landon DAY (18 months): Carlson Day, father of the infant was charged with 1st degree murder and attempted murder. Landon was found dead by police after responding to a 911 call by the boy’s mother, who was seriously injured. The woman was transported to hospital with a slashed throat and survived. Police have not released the autopsy results of the child.

Toronto, ON. - October 23, 1993
Dorys DELGADILLIO, is alleged to have been killed by her husband. A warrant was issued for his arrest.  No further information available.

Toronto, ON. - November 109, 2008
Wanda DELONG (64) Elizabeth DELONG-TOMPKINS (44), Richard DELONG (38). All were stabbed to death by the husband and father of the victims. Keith Delong (66) took his own life with self-inflicted bullet wound. Neighbours reported the family was close knit and had plans to travel in the days ahead. They felt that maybe finances are what triggered the homicides/ suicide. (Toronto Star) M.S.

Brenda DEMOOR, 39, mother of 4: died from blunt force trauma. Her estranged boyfriend was charged.

Toronto, ON. - July 25, 1991
Norma DEROSE: was strangled by her husband. He was convicted and sentenced to 6 years. 

London, ON. - June, 2006
Deborah DEVINE, 33: died from smoke inhalation. Her common-law spouse Lorenzo Kemp (38) was charged with arson, endangering life and 2nd degree murder.

Oshawa, ON. - June, 1998
Sabrina DEVITTORS, 26: was stabbed to death by her boyfriend Angelo Consiggillio who was arrested and convicted.

Richmond Hill, ON. - June 15, 2006
Kamlesh, DHINGRA 56, mother of 2: was killed by her husband Ved Dhingra.  He attempted suicide. In 2008, Ved Dhingra was found not criminally responsible in the death of his wife, Kamlesh Dhingra, because he suffers from schizoaffective disorder. He was released to the care of the Whitby Mental Health Centre hospital. (Toronto Star July 5, 2008)

Amandeep Kaur DHILLON, 22, mother of 1 (aged 22 months): was stabbed to death by her father-in-law Kamikar Singh Dhillon. Kamikar Singh Dhillon (47) was arrested by Peel police and charged with 1st degree murder.  The victim had a 22 month old son, who has been raised in Punjab by her maternal grandparents. The grieving relatives talked about a trouble marriage and unhappy life in Canada. Her cousin stated the victim was never allowed out alone and was always in the company of her husband or father-in-law. (Toronto Star, Jan 02/07, 2009)
The Toronto Str (31/01/09) ran a full front page story stating in part that the victims family paid a dowry for the arranged marriage and that they never met the groom or his father prior to the wedding. Their hope was that this marriage would lead them and their other siblings to be sponsored to Canada.

Lori DUPONT, 37 mother of 1: was a surgical nurse who was stabbed to death by her estranged boyfriend Dr. Marc. Daniel. The accused overdosed and died days later. Lori had applied for a restraining order and the case was to be heard by the courts December 22, 2005. She also complained to her employer (the hospital) where both were employed. Gillian HADLEY 35, mother of 3: was shot at point blank range by her estranged husband Ralph. Gillian fled the matrimonial home naked and neighbours made several attempts to keep her from the grasps of her husband while she held her infant son.   Ralph had been on three different bails when he orchestrated her death and his suicide. Their son Chase (18 months) was saved by neighbours John Wallace and his wife Ana. An inquest was held into the murder-suicide and set down 63 recommendations. Mulaka HASSAN-ALI, 23, mother of 1: was shot by her estranged common-law spouse Amin Kassim. The man then took the child and police negotiated the child’s safe return. Mulaka has been separated from the man for over a year and resided in a shelter until she found permanent housing. She was killed 6 weeks after she moved into her own home.

Brenda HEALEY, 27: of Newmarket. Police discovered the body of Steve Daniel who was killed by a train in Brock Township – 50 kilometers from Sutton. At the scene was a vehicle linked to Brenda Healey. A car registered to Daniel was discovered at the Sutton address where they located the body of Brenda Healey. Both worked together. The media reported that several neighbours told the Toronto Star that Daniel had spent time in jail after he stabbed a woman about a decade ago. (Toronto Star- Mon. Leslie Kelly died from stab wounds at the time of the initial assault. Her son Nathan succumbed to his injuries 2 days later and her husband Rick succumbed to his injuries due to an undetected blood clot as he was preparing to return to his children and brother. Gino Petralia was shot by the police at the time of the initial stabbings. Petralia was the ex-spouse of the mother of Rick Kelly who along with his wife Leslie were was raising his step-brother after the death of his mother. It was reported that Petralia has a history of violence and that he attempted to attend a birthday party for one of the children on that day. (Toronto Star- Nov & Dec.08)

Patty-Anne KILLINGBECK, 30, mother of 2: died from blunt force trauma. There was a history of abuse in the relationship. Her boyfriend Ian Esford  was convicted of 2nd degree murder. Evidence entered into trial was that he killed her and hid her body for one day, then dumped it in a wooded area in a shallow grave. Skelton remains were found between December 2001 and April 2002.

Edyta LEWANDOWSKI (32), mother of 1:  On February 25, 2008 the ex-spouse of the victim (Donald Sneyd) called 911 to report that his former wife and mother of their 2 year old sun was slumped against the front door in his foyer – a bullet in her hand and a gun by her side as she was preparing to pick up their child for a much anticipated extended visit. Sang LIANG, 38, Vivian Liang-Chau, aged 3 and Ian Liang-Chau aged 5 months: were slashed to the point of near decapitation. Seasoned police officers were traumatized by the crime scene. Charged with 3 counts of 1st degree murder is the husband and father of the victims, Huc Minh Chau.

Patricia had suffered a stroke 18 months prior to her death and was using a wheelchair.  Friends described the family ‘as very close knit and loving’. Charged with 2 counts of 1st degree murder was Tedford Loyal – husband and father of the victims.

Oshawa, ON. - December 04, 1999
Valerie LUCAS, 23, mother of 3: was shot in front of her 3 children at the 1st child access visit granted by the courts and fought against by Valerie. The courts ordered that since Valerie resided in a battered women’s shelter in Barrie she must meet the father half way between his home in Belleville and her Barrie address. The victim predicted her own death days prior to the homicide. Robert Bateman her estranged common-law spouse was charged with murder and convicted to life imprisonment (25 years). No date of when parole would be considered.

Woodbridge, ON. - January, 2000
Colleen LUCIANO, 33: was stabbed to death. Her body was found in a dumpster. Her husband Michael Luciano was charged with her murder then found not guilty by jury. His acquittal is under appeal by the Crown.

Bohumila LUFT, 26, Daniel Luft, 7, Nicole Luft, 5, Peter Luft, 2 and David Luft 2 months: Bohumilla was stabbed to death and her four children were shot. The husband and father Vilem then shot himself. Mental health issues are cited as the cause of the tragedy. M.S

Francine MAILEY, 37, Jessica Mailey, 12, Brandon Mailey 9 and Kevin Mailey 6: were shot by their estranged husband and father Frank Mailey. He then set himself ablaze when he set the house on fire after shooting his family. He attempted to escape the fire but died at the scene of the crime from his burns. Francine had sought court protection.

Airi MAKINEN, 46: was brutally bludgeoned to death with a claw hammer by her estranged common-law spouse Runo Mark Cairenius. He pleaded guilty on November 15, 1993 to 1st degree murder. Note: In October, 2008, Cairenius (69) applied for early release under Canada’s ‘faint hope’ clause after serving 16 ½ years of his life sence. The jury for the Parole Board deliberated 6 hours before rendering their decision that he must serve 20 years. At sentencing he was to serve 26 years prior to parole. Cairenius wrote a book detailing how and why he intended to murder his wife before he bludgeoned her to death.

Vaughn Maxwell Wilson was acquitted by a jury of 1st degree murder and convicted of the lesser charged of 2nd degree murder (unplanned but intentional).

Fallon MASON, 23: was stabbed to death by her boyfriend Greg Martins (24). Martins’ was arrested after a police stand-off.

Mary-Anne MATESIC, 47, mother of 1: was shot by her estranged husband. Mary-Anne had left the abusive relationship and returned to the home for personal effects accompanied by her adult son. When the husband shot Mary-Anne their son grabbed the gun and shot his father. The son is now charged with 2nd degree murder.

COURT UPDATE:  The Ontario Court of Appeal has ordered a new trial for a 380 lb Brantford man who says he accidently killed his wife after thinking she had poisoned him. Peter Mathison was originally convicted of 2nd degree murder in 2005. (Toronto Star, Nov. 06,. 2008)

Adele MATINET, 22: died in her home from internal injuries caused by blunt force trauma. Her estranged boyfriend Dennis Trout was charged with 2nd degree murder.

Joyce MATTINSON, 63: was beaten to death by her husband Bernard Mattinson. It is reported that Bernard Mattinson had mental health issues, but was still charged with 2nd degree murder and was able to stand trial.

Nicole MATTISON, 52: was shot by her husband David Mattison. The victim was shot with Mattison’s police service revolver, dismembered and thrown into a nearby lake. He was convicted in 1993 to 10 years and released to a halfway house after serving 4 years in prison.

Janie MAXWELL, 33, mother of 1: was beaten to death by her common-law spouse Paul Beard. He was convicted and sentenced to 7 years.

Collingwood, ON. - March 08, 1996
Arlene MAY, 39, mother of 5:  was shot to death by her estranged boyfriend Randy Iles. Randy then took his own life. Randy was known to the police through various charges of assault against Arlene. Arlene predicted her own death and made a new will days before her death to ensure her young children were look after by her older children. There was a Coroner’s Inquest into the death’s  in 1998. The jury made 214 recommendations to the Province of Ontario to enhance services for battered and abused women. It was identified that the police and court jurisdictions did not communicate with each other.

Henny Ann McALPINE, 48: was stabbed to death by her husband Bruce McAlpine. He left the scene and hurled himself in front of oncoming traffic. Police who were attending the accident then located his deceased wife. Neighbours described them as ‘an incredible, loving and nice people that were always together.”

Rose McGROATY, 46,: was killed and dismembered by her common-law spouse Robert Wiszniowski. Body parts were found in several Toronto locations. He was convicted November 01, 2006, to 14 years.

Janet McKNIGHT, 52: was stabbed to death by her husband Dr. Robert McKnight. He was convicted and required to serve 17 years prior to parole. UPDATE: Dr. Robert (63) the Hamilton surgeon who was serving a life sentence for the high profile murder of his wife Janet in 1994 was found dead in his room at the Pittsburgh Institution in July 2004. The Deputy Warden said the incident is under investigation. McKnight had been found hanging in his Hamilton home in 1994 after stabbing his wife Janet, a nursing professor at McMaster University was stabbed more than 50 times with a bread knife. He was sentenced to life without parole for 17 years and the term was reduced to 14 years by the Ontario Court of Appeal.   (Toronto Star – July 05, 2004).

Thailand – December, 2005
Barbara-Lynn McLEOD, 61: was killed by her husband Stewart McLeod (45)  in Thailand. Barbara-Lynn was a Canadian citizen and it is reported that an argument occurred when she wanted her husband of 5 years to return to Canada with her on a permanent basis and he refused. McLeod was convicted in January, 2006 of beating his wife to death with a hammer and then dumping her battered body in bushes along a residential street in the Thai capital. He has been sentenced to 34 years.

Paula  MENENDEZ, 34: was found gagged with both arms and ankles bound while hanging from the rafters of the home of her estranged husband's girlfriend.The accused is Christopher Little the estranged husband of Julia Crocker whose was body was discovered in her bed and feet away from her two unharmed children.  Little has been charged with two counts of murder as the body of his estranged wife, Julia Crocker  cause of death is stabbing and having her throat slit.  It is reported Menendez died from strangulation and it has yet to be identified of how she arrived at the location. E.g. kidnapped by Little. Reports indicate that the couples were known to each other, but police have not disclosed further information pre-trial. The estranged husband of Paula was Toronto sports newscaster Rick Ralph who was on the east coast at his father’s funeral at the time of the double homicide. It is acknowledged that Ralph was dating Crocker at the time of their deaths.

Christine NORCIA, 22, was stabbed to death by her estranged boyfriend Nick Capparelli.  He was convicted to life with no parole for 14 years.  He delivered the body to a Toronto police division in the trunk of his car with the knife still imbedded in her chest.

Natalie NOVAK,  20: was stabbed by her estranged boyfriend Arssei Hindeessa.  Hours after the homicide, police located the accused on the Bloor Viaduct. He was apprehended and charged with 2nd degree murder. At the time of the homicide there was a court imposed ‘restraining order’ in place, but friends indicated that both parties were  in the company of mutual friends hours prior to the murder. What was not established was if the victim was comfortable in his company but might have felt safe being in the presence of others.
TRIAL UPDATE: Arssei Hindessa was convicted of 2nd degree murder after jury deliberations for six days concluding Hindessa intended to kill Natalie but did not plan or consider the act beforehand. The family were upset by the jury's verdict and in their prepared statement read by Det. Stacy Gallant stated: "Natalie was only one of many women and children killed at the hands of a violent male', noting that Ontario reported 121 women and 20 children murdered by male partners between 2002 and 2006. * They crossed out 'thanking the jurors for their services'. Jared OSIDACZ, aged 9: was stabbed to death by his estranged father Andrew Osidacz.  Jared bravely intervened in a domestic dispute between his dad and his new girlfriend Paula Ferrell. Both Paula and her 8 year old daughter Sarah survived their wound.  After the stabbing Osidacz, left the scene and went to his ex-wife’s (Julie Craven)  home where he held her hostage.  Police attempts to negotiate her safe release failed and Andrew was shot by police.  Jared’s mother is now seeking the Province of Ontario “Jared’s Law” be ascended into law where any child that is a fatality of a domestic dispute automatically warrants a coroner’s inquest. Craven had sought the courts protection in Osidacz only have supervised access to Jared and was denied.

Kinread his accomplice.  Ranger Roan was the estranged boyfriend of Marsha who was leaving Toronto to pursue her education. The victims were killed in the basement of the Ottey family home. Both men were convicted and their convictions were upheld by the Appeals Court.

Melissa  PAJKOWKI,  21: was shot to death by her estranged boyfriend P. Morrissey.  The body was located in a van after a traffic accident. The accused was also found in the van with self-inflicted wounds.

Eva  PAPOUSEK, 36, and mother of 1: was killed by her estranged boyfriend Janusz Ryback. He was charged with 1st degree murder after police discovered her body in her apartment.

Hamilton, ON. - March, 2008
Nadine PARKER, 36: Hamilton police determined that the victim died as a  result of a deliberate act which involved a motor vehicle when the accused drove their minivan into a concrete highway pillar in Hamilton. Police found there was no conclusive evidence of an attempted suicide on the part of Norman Parker who was the former mayor of Dunnville. It was reported there was domestic strife in the marriage. Nadine died instantly and Norman died later in hospital of a blunt force trauma injury from the high speed collision as per the Coroner’s Report. (Toronto Star April 03, 2008)

Aqsa PARVEZ (16) Aqsa was a grade 10 high school student and was alleged attacked by her father Muhammad when she refused to conform to religious traditions to wear a hajib in public and at school. Aqsa died from her injuries. Aqsa Parvez lies in an unmarked grave at Meadowvale Cemetery in Brampton. (Toronto Sun Dec. 10/08)  Her father Muhammad Parvez (58) and her brother Waqas (27) have been charged with her death  A hearing to determine if there is sufficient evident to proceed to trail began in Brampton Januuary, 2009 and is expected to last several weeks. Angelika PAULS, 51: was reported to have fallen off a cliff while on a camping trip with her common-law spouse Mike Polmac. After a full investigation based on the autopsy report  police charged Polmac with 1st degree murder in April 2004.  He was convicted to life imprisonment without parole for 25 years on November 16, 2006.

Hermoutie  RAGHUNAUTH 28, mother of 1: was poisoned by her husband Ganesh Raghunauth on Mother’s Day. Hermoutie was pregnant at the time with her 2nd child. The autopsy results showed a lethal dose of cyanide 64 times the lethal dose in her blood. Later a mortgage company foreclosed on the house shared by the couple and would not give title to the legal heir, the young son of the couple. There was media attention to the issue and the resolve is unknown.

Kathy RAJHER, 66: was stabbed to death by her husband Vinko Rajher who then took his own life. There is a reported history of abuse in the marriage. The woman predicted her own death and was killed while in the process of selling the family home and applying for a divorce. The woman was known to a battered women’s shelter.

Update:  Raman Varadharjan (37) pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of his wife Gnanalakshmi on February 19, 2009. He was sentenced to 8 years for stomping his wife to deth after accusing her of lying to him.   Given credit for time served in custody the former chemist is facing 41 months incarceration at a federal prison.  The couple had an arranged marriage in 1998 in India. Hermattie ROOPIDIAL, 25, mother of 2:  Her body was found in a closet in the family home several days after her estranged husband Dillraij (Tony) went missing. He is the primary suspect in the homicide. The original police search of the home failed to locate the body. Relatives were also residing in the home at the time. Police reported that there has been a history of domestic disturbances in the relationship and the couple were currently in divorce proceedings at the time of the murder.

Jassi Kaur SIDHU was found with her throat slit in Punjab when her family refused to accept her love affair and marriage to a rickshaw driver.
Update: In April 2008 the Punjab High Court sentenced four of those accused in the case to life imprisonment, including the victim’s maternal uncle in Punjab and a police officer. The victim’s mother, Malkiat Kaur and uncle Surjit Singh Badesha ‘remain free’ in Maple Ridge, B.C.  They have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder.  I(ndian police say warrants for their arrest have been issued. Horace Weekes (59) has been charged with 1st degree and two charges of attempted murder. Ms. Stewart had a restraining order against the accused at the time of the murder and assaults. It is reported that the victim was in a prior volatile marriage in Turkey and her spouse had stabbed her. She fled to Canada for a new life and a new marriage with Isiko. At the time of her death they were estranged, but she was getting her life back together, studying English and planning to attend university. Ling WANG, 32: was stabbed to death by her estranged boyfriend F. Ladidi. Her body was found in a trunk of a car at the rear of the apartment building where the couple resided. An autopsy revealed she was stabbed 11 times, including 3 wounds to the heart and one to each breast. The couple were preparing to separate. The accused told the victim ‘he would be her worst nightmare’. He was convicted May 02, 2006 to life without parole for 15 years. At the trial his previous wife testified of the abuse in their relationship. 

Orillia, ON. - August 19, 2006
Alyssa Karen WATSON, 20, mother of 2: was strangled to death. Roy Niemi was arrested in December 2008 and charged with her murder. He was apparently known to Alyssa through a learning centre they both attended, but he was not her boyfriend. Roy Niemi is being held in the Penetanguishene Correctional Facility pending trial. The next court appearance is scheduled for Barrie Court on June 5, and is expected to be a "pre-trial" motion.

Kingston, ON. - August , 1997
Jutta WEBER 48: the remains of Jutta were found dismembered and buried in a swampy wooded area near Kingston. Her boyfriend Jim Wall was charged and convicted of manslaughter.

Cookstown, ON. - April, 1999
Katherine WELLWOOD, 54: was shot to death by her husband Geoffrey Wellwood. It was reported that they were married 31 years. Charges and trial information not available.

Point au Baril, ON. - April, 1997
Margaret WEST, 66, mother of 3: was shot to death by her estranged husband who then took his own life. M.S

Edmonton, Alberta - July, 2005
 Liana WHITE, 29, pregnant and the mother of 1: died from blunt force trauma. The accused is the husband and father of the unborn child. Michael White was charged and convicted of 1st degree murder and must service 17 years before parole. White participated with police in the search of his missing wife.

Toronto (Don Mills) ON. - October 18, 2007
Megan WILDE, 8: The victim died by ligature strangulation. The accused was her father Rick Wilde (36) who turned himself into police.

Thorold, ON. – February, 2005
Heather WILLIAMS, 27, mother of 2: was shot to death by her estranged husband Tony Williams who then took his own life. A history of abuse and violence in the relationship was confirmed by parents but disputed by friends. M.S.

Leslie WILLIAMS, 32: died from blunt force trauma to the head. The accused is the estranged husband by the same surname then took his own life. M.S.

London, ON. – January, 2005 
Laura WILSON, 23: was stabbed to death by her estranged boyfriend James Van Der Sanden. A friend of Laura’s was also attacked by survived the assault. VanDerSanden was charged was charged with 1st degree murder. A neighbour stated “nothing like this happens around here’.

Leamington, ON. - March 03, 2007
Lyndon WIPER, 26, mother of 1: shot to death by her estranged boyfriend Jean Claude Gallant 36 of Windsor ON.  His body was located in his car near the Town of Essex. Lyndon resided with her parents which was the scene of the homicide. Police would not speculate on a motive but confirmed that the couple had been involved in a relationship that ended in January. Markham, ON. - February, 1999
Maria WONG, 44: was stabbed to death in the garage of the home she shared with her spouse. Her husband Shu Kwan (John) Wong hired several persons to kill her and she was almost decapitated. Mr. Wong along with 7 other people were charged and convicted of murder and / or being an accomplice to murder. The crime was money motivated.
COURT/TRIAL UPDATE:  Norman Figueroa 28, Andre Jones 38, and Christian Ortiz 28 (contract killers) were sentenced to 14 years for 2nd degree murder. Mr. Justice T ed Minden called the three ‘cold, calculating, heartless and dangerous’ and guilty of an ‘unspeakably brutal’ crime.  All three were convicted for the murder of Marie Wong. Her husband is serving a life sentence in prison with no change of parole. (Toronto Star, August 14, 2008.)

Brampton, ON. – January 07, 1996
Marilyn WOODLAND, 54, and mother of 1: was stabbed to death by her estranged husband K. Woodland. He was charged and convicted of murder with no parole for 10 years.

Toronto, ON. - September 11, 2006
Nadia WYRSCH, 24: was stabbed to death by her boyfriend Andre Aschwanden (35).  Mr. Aschwanden also killed an ‘alleged’ boyfriend of Nadia. He then took his own life. All three were Swiss nationals visiting Toronto and staying at a downtown hotel which was the scene of the crime.  M.S.

Tahmina YEASMAN, 23: died from ligature neck compression (strangulation). The accused (Mazan Ahmed was arrested in London, Ontario and charged with 2nd degree murder on November 19, 2008. Trial information pending. (Toronto Star – 20/11/08)

Mary YEATES, 57: was killed by her husband who then took his own life. M.S.

Yhonete YING, 25, mother of 1: was shot to death by her common-law husband Jason Lopie. He was charged with 2nd degree murder.

Oshawa, ON. - October 29, 2008
Amber Frances YOUNG (21), mother of 1: Jason Rodgerson has been charged with 2nd degree murder. Stephen Roberts (30) of Oshawa has been charged with producing marijuana and possession for the purpose of trafficking. It has not been established what the relationship was with the accused. Trial Pending.

Hamilton, ON. - June, 1999
Donna YOUNG, 32: was strangled by her husband Rodney Young. He was charged with 1st degree murder.

Toronto, ON. - December 31, 2004
Kristina ZAJACKOWSKI,  44, mother of 2: was stabbed to death by her husband Jack Zajackowski. Update: Jack (Jacek) Zajaczkowski (48) was convicted of 2nd degree murder. (Toronto Star – February 24, 2008)

Toronto, ON. - April 30, 1985.
Hanan ZAWADI, 22: died from blunt force trauma. Her father Hossain Zawadi was convicted of 1st degree murder and must serve 18 years before parole, at which time he is to be deported. The murder was an ‘honour’ killing.

Toronto, ON. – January 12, 1991
Zahra ZENALI, 39, mother of 2:  was shot to death by her estranged husband Hossain Zenali in front of their child.

Vancouver, B.C – October, 09, 2002
Amanda ZHAO: The parents of Amanda Zhao arrived in B.C. in 2008 wanting answers about the murder of their young daughter. She was reported missing by her boyfriend on October 09, 2002. Her body was found in a bag 2 weeks later in a wooded area near Mission, about 80 kilometres east of Vancouver. Police had questioned her boyfriend Ang Li, but Li was allowed to return to China before the RCMP charged him with her murder. (Toronto Star 08/10/08)

Toronto, ON. - December 25, 2007
Lliada (Lois) ZOIS, 22 – Jaimie Zois, 14: The accused Nana Yaw is the common-law spouse of the victim. It is alleged that he had slain both Lois and Jaimie and forcibly confined, stabbed and bound a 2nd brother Tommy. Tommy was able to escape the following day (December 26) to get police assistance. The accused has been charged with 2 counts of 1st degree murder, 1 count of attempted murder and 1 count of forcible confinement.

Toronto, ON. - February, 1991
Louise ZOLLERAMO, 39, mother of 2: was shot to death by her estranged husband with the same surname. 

Orangeville, ON. - January 15, 1999
Jennifer Zumach 21, mother of 1: was stabbed to death, dismembered and buried in various locations in the Halton area. Police infiltrated a biker club and befriended the suspect. The accused then went to the site of where he had buried some of the remains and was under police surveillance while he removed parts of the body from the burial site. He was then arrested after leaving the scene while driving his motorcycle with his wife’s head in the saddle bag. Police were also investigating and treating the death of his first wife as suspicious. There is no report of their findings at this writing. James Randall the common-law spouse of the victim was charged with the murder and an indignity to a deceased person.
