Imambargah Ali Raza caretaker Sibtain Hussain Jaffery shot in Karachi

KARACHI, March 7 2002: A caretaker of an Imambargah and a shopkeeper were wounded in an attack on M. A. Jinnah Road in the early morning on Thursday. Police said Sibte Hasan, aged 45, with his children, was waiting for schoolvan below Taj Medical Complex, when unidentified armed men, riding on a motorcycle, sprayed him with bullets and fled the scene.

Police said as Sibte Hasan, who was standing close to a general store, fell to the ground, Mohammed Ishaq, who was inside the store, came to help him and suffered a bullet wound to his leg. Both the injured men were rushed to Civil Hospital where Ishaq was admitted. Hasan was later shifted to Aga Khan Hospital.

Hasan was stated to be in critical condition as he had received three bullets in his abdomen, police said. He was a caretaker of Imambargah Ali Raza situated on M. A. Jinnah Road.

Sectarian killings condemned

KARACHI, March 7: Jafaria Alliance Karachi has asked the government to take concrete steps to check sectarian killings in the country. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday , Alliance leaders Allama Hasan Zafar Naqvi and Allama Abbas Kumaili castigated the administration for its failure to arrest "terrorists'.

They said even on Thursday two members of the Shia community had been fired upon in Lyari and Lines Area. Dr Muzaffar Ali Sammon (more)was killed in Lyari while Syed Sibte Hasan was injured in Lines Area and had been lying in hospital in a critical condition.

They expressed surprise that despite having support of more than a dozen agencies at their disposal, the authorities have failed to arrest the killers.

They urged the government to issue them arms licence so that they could protect themselves. In reply to a question, Allama Naqvi said that since 1994 over 70 doctors had been killed in Karachi alone. On this occasion, Allama Furqan Haider Abidi, Maulana Nazar Mehdi and Maulana Aftab Haider Jafri were also present.
