Dr Muzaffar Sammoon shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI, March 7 2002: Unknown terrorists assassinated one more doctor outside a bakery in Lyari area within Bughdadi police precincts on Thursday.

Dr Muzaffar Sammoon, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of X-ray Department of Lyari General Hospital, was gunned down when unidentified terrorists ambushed his car.

Sources and witnesses said that Dr Sammoon, resident of Shah Baig Lanes had was returning home in his car (ABE-252) after dropping his children at their school. On the way he stopped at a bakery when three armed assailants came near the victim and opened fire near Ali Hotel.

He sustained multiple bullets and was rushed to Civil Hospital in serious condition where doctors pronounced him dead. Sammoon, sources further said, was the father of six and had good reputation in the area. He was a well-known social worker and running several welfare projects. Sources in police held that it was apparently a sectarian killing. It may be mentioned that three days ago Dr Alay Safdar Zaidi of 'The Kidney Center' was assassinated in Clifton.

Namaz-e-Janaza of Dr Sammoon was offered at Sayana Masjid, Lyari. He was laid to rest at Mewa Shah graveyard.

Meanwhile, in another incident of firing, two pillion riders shot at and wounded Sibtain Hussain Jaffery, a caretaker of an Imambargah, near Imambargah Ali Raza on MA Jinnah Road within Brigade police limits. He and a shopkeeper, Ishaque, sustained bullet injuries in this incident.

Sources said that Jaffery had also gone to drop his children to their nearby school and was returning home when unidentified terrorists intercepted him and shot at him. Both the injured were rushed to JPMC.

Sectarian killings condemned KARACHI, March 7: Jafaria Alliance Karachi has asked the government to take concrete steps to check sectarian killings in the country. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday , Alliance leaders Allama Hasan Zafar Naqvi and Allama Abbas Kumaili castigated the administration for its failure to arrest "terrorists'.

They said even on Thursday two members of the Shia community had been fired upon in Lyari and Lines Area. Dr Muzaffar Ali Sammon was killed in Lyari while Syed Sibte Hasan (more) was injured in Lines Area and had been lying in hospital in a critical condition.

They expressed surprise that despite having support of more than a dozen agencies at their disposal, the authorities have failed to arrest the killers.

They urged the government to issue them arms licence so that they could protect themselves. In reply to a question, Allama Naqvi said that since 1994 over 70 doctors had been killed in Karachi alone. On this occasion, Allama Furqan Haider Abidi, Maulana Nazar Mehdi and Maulana Aftab Haider Jafri were also present.
