Upcoming Events (in order by date/time, there's a method to
this madness!)
We Mar 17 St Pat's Day & History. (from wilstar.com, pagan info from
www.paganfed.demon.co.uk). St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, born in
Wales ~385 AD (given name Maewyn). He almost didn't get the job of bishop
of Ireland because he lacked the required scholarship. Far from being a saint,
until 16, he considered himself a pagan. At 16, he was sold into slavery by a
group of Irish marauders that raided his village. During his captivity of 6 years,
he became closer to God, before escaping from slavery. He went to Gaul &
studied in the monastery under St. Germain, bishop of Auxerre for 12 years &
became aware of his calling to convert the pagans (myth. gods, cosmic, life
force) to Christianity. But his superiors instead appointed St. Palladius whom
was transferred to Scotland 2 years later. Patrick, having adopted that Christian
name earlier, was appointed as 2nd bishop to Ireland. The Celtic Druids were so
upset with Patrick's success at winning converts that they arrested him several
times. Each time he escaped. He traveled throughout Ireland, establishing
monasteries, setting up schools & churches to aid his conversion of the Irish
country to Christianity. After 30 years, Patrick retired to County Down & died
March 17, 461 AD commemorated as St. Patrick's Day. (bona fide Irish tale)
Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Trinity. He used it in his
sermons to represent how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit could all exist
as separate elements of the same entity. His followers adopted the custom of
wearing a shamrock on his feast day. 1737 St. Patrick's Day custom came to
America and was 1st publicly celebrated in this country, in Boston.
