Simmish
Marriage
Customs
From the ancient times, Sim women have been a great strength to Simmish society.  They have been truly equal partners with their men even in times when human and other societies may have faltered in women's rights.  In the old times in Simkeep a young sorceress took to herself a warrior husband and with a great spell hid him from his enemies.  It is known that Simmish women are strong in every community throughout the Sim world.  Sim men and women are equal partners in life.  This is most truly evident in the fact that when a man marries a woman in her own household he takes on her family name.  This is a custom from our revered past, wherever the marriage takes place, whether it be in the man or woman's household, the marriage partner adopts the family name.
The couple's courtship may be very swift or take a long time depending on the compatibility of the couple. In the olden times it seemed that there was a greater rush to marry than in the modern era. Relationships evolved quickly and under the right conditions blossomed into love.  Nowadays relationships between couples evolve much more slowly, and men and women are not in the great rush to marry as they were before. Simmish dating begins with mutual compatibility and common interests.  Like most other societies it begins many times with friendship and evolves into love.  The courtship ritual involves the couple giving each other gifts, and cooking meals.  Food is very important in Simmish culture and plays an important role in social interaction.  Many Sims follow the tradition of cooking a large meal before they propose marriage.
It is a well-known fact that many marriage proposals have failed because of the oversight in keeping this important tradition.  Entertainment also plays a role in the courtship process.  Sims love to have a good time and are always looking for ways to have fun.  Couples seeking to enrich their relationship may engage in a large variety of entertainment. Dancing, games. and social interactions always serve to bring two lovers closer together over time.
In the old times most of the courtship was done in the home.  Perhaps that is where are custom of the beloved taking on the household name came to be.  The prospective bride or groom would be entertained and fed, and engage in intimate social interaction. Then the Sim would get down on their knees and propose marriage.  If the intended was truly happy, then the beloved would accept the proposal and the couple were married.
In modern times, many Simmish take their dates downtown, or to vacation resorts which are in close proximity to many communities.  With all these new possibilites, many couples now frequently meet and date outside the home.  However the same rules apply from that earlier time.  You must know your partner very well before the vows are taken.
