| "Any one wanna go get a pizza or something?" Nick asked as the group walked out of the Y, all bundling their parkas around them to sheild themselves from the wind. "We don't have a lot of time, man." Brian pointed out. "Our limos leave in about an hour." He checked his watch. "How long does it take to get back to the hotel?" No one had an answer. "Should we catch a bus?" Dani asked. Allie wrinkled her nose. "I hate public transportation. We always get recognized. Anyway, it's not that big a deal if we're late. What are they going to do? Start our concert with out us?" Nick laughed. "You never know. Michelle might want to do it with out you." "Yeah, I bet she will." Dani agreed. "Remember that time the four of us wanted a break from touring, and Michelle said she was just going to go on and do it by herself?" She asked Allie. Allie nodded, but she'd opened her book again, and was reading while she walked, so she wasn't paying much attention any more. "Let's hitchhike back, I'm freezing." Brian whined. "Okay!" Dani took a step out towards the street, and held up her thumb. Brian grabbed the hood of her coat and pulled her back. "I was kidding!" He said. Dani shrugged. "Well, it was a good idea. It's damn cold out here. I'm not walking." She stepped back out, and held up her thumb again. Nick went to pull her back again, but a nice looking middle-aged woman in a station wagon stopped. "How many, darling?" The lady asked. Dani's green eyes widened in surprised, but she looked back at her friends. "Anyone else coming?" Brian shook his head decidedly. Catelyn and Allie hung back with him. Nick looked back at the group of three, then smiled at Dani. "Okay, fine. We'll do it your way." The two of them climbed into the car. "See ya!" Dani called through the window as the car pulled away. "Enjoy the freezing cold winter air!" Brian and Catelyn watched as the car pulled away. Allie started walking again, still reading. "That was cute." Catelyn announced. Brian raised his eyebrows. "What was?" "The way Nick went with her. He didn't want hitchhike any more than the rest of us, but he went to protect her." She said, grinning. "It's adorable." Brian didn't seem to share her enthusiasm. "Yeah, but what if something happens to them? They just got in a car with a strange lady." "Yeah." Catelyn smiled at him. "A strange, little, middle aged woman with a pomeranian in her station wagon. What's she gonna to them? Force milk and cookies down their throats?" Brian laughed. "So why didn't you get in the car with them?" He asked. Catelyn shrugged. "I didn't want you to feel like a baby for saying no." She said, winking at him. "Aw, so you stayed behind to protect my feelings?" He asked, wrapping her in a hug, and making a bug production out of kissing the top of her head. He started to pull away, but Catelyn stopped him. "Hey, wait a second. It's a lot warmer this way. Let's stay like this." She grabbed his arm, and secured it around her shoulders. |
| "Thanks a lot!" Dani called, shutting the door of the station wagon as she and Nick climbed out in front of the hotel. The woman smiled. "Oh, anytime, honey." She waved. "And thanks for the autographs." Nick and Dani both assured her that it was no problem. "I hope your daughter likes them." Dani said sweetly. The lady started the car again. Nick and Dani turned to go back into the hotel when they heard her voice again. "Oh, dears? Let me just tell you that you two are adorable together." She winked at them and drove away. "Agh!" Dani moaned once she was out of hearing range. "Can anyone in this world accept that we are just friends?" Nick shrugged. "Aparently not. I bet Cate and Brian spent the entire walk home talking about how we're xecretly in love with each other." He said, rolling his eyes. |
