| When I decided to do this section on my site about redheads I looked at many areas of my own life. I was the lucky charm in my family being born the only child with red hair, very fair skin and green eyes. As a young child people thought I was so adorable with my little carrot top curls and freckles across my nose blossoming onto my cheeks. But being a red head as a child I wonder how many of us enjoy that period in our lives. Redheads are taught at a very impressible age that �we� are indeed different and the brunt of many jokes. Being a redhead as a child was a lot of name calling such as carrot top, red, gingersnap, and ghostly like names. It made me feel different as though I was from another planet but as I grew I was faced with another characteristic of being a redhead specially sexually from the male population which is being adored and admired. What is it that makes men think red-heads are better lovers? How did we get the reputation as being fiery? Why are red-heads bad tempered? This is one of the many questions I am often asked .. Do you have a bad temper? I consider myself to be normal as the next person. I am out spoken, somewhat bossy and opinionated which many may misconstrue my words but I see myself as speaking to the point of matters. No mincing of the words for misunderstandings as I see it. But moving right along. Redheads make up small minority in the world, and are a rare find with perhaps 5% of the global population, and historically have always been treated with prejudice and suspicion, or with amazement and awe. It is said to be that redheads descend from the tribe of Irish and Scots known as Picts, of Caledonia of Ancient Scotland. Theo dominance of redheads was said to have been the Ancient Lost City of Atlantis. In ancient times of Ireland it was said that redheaded women were unlucky and if a traveler were to happen upon a woman with red hair he must turn around and return home and start his journey over again. It is also said to believe that red heads bring bad luck to a ship, so don't sail with one on board. Even though redheads are considered to be unlucky is it said to the rub your hand on the head of one is lucky. |
| I enjoy being a redhead and I also enjoy my Irish heritage. If I think I am special don�t blame me and say it is only arrogance cause after all it was history and the fascination of people that made redheads think and know we are special. We are the only group of people that is a minority when as children we are the brunt of your jokes and as adults we become admired and adored and a sought after creature. I am very proud that I am one of the few who gets to experience the thrills of life that only a red-head can and what a pity for those who don�t. Ireland�s 320,000 natural redheads are the last of a dying breed according to scientists who say in a special report this week that too few people are now carrying the red hair gene for it to survive. Ireland, because it has one of the highest percentage of redheads per head of population in the world, will prove to be the last place in the world to have redheads. Red hair, say scientists in a report by the Oxford Hair Foundation, is in retreat because a maximum of just 4% of the world�s population carry the gene. Because the gene is recessive, it is diluted whenever carriers of the gene have children with people who have the stronger brown hair gene. Dr. John Gray of the Oxford Hair Foundation said black and brown haired people are wiping out the red hair gene. �The way things are going red hair will either be extremely rare or extinct by the end of the century,� he said. |
